I was just about to write I discover the fault and guess what: yes, I mismatched the connectors.
Plugged them the wrong way: white with black and black with white.

I had that same problem once, where my friend hooked up the connectors for me while I finished the exhaust. I had forgotten he is partially color blind. He swapped the black and green connectors. The engine would crank but not start. Once we discovered it, it was an easy fix. No harm done.
