I have a similar issue with an early coupe , I would have a partner in front of the car pushing down on the front of the hood at the badge while you are pulling on the cable even if you need to disconnect the handle and use vice grips on the cable end....Bert

quick update... i fixed the problem. i had my kid working the frunk release while i gave the hood cpr but what released it was the light use of a mid sized screwdriver with pry bar on the end... it popped open after a few tries and now i have learned much about the 'back up' wire as i have mid year 1991 - how do we know this again? other than the cylinder jugs have the groove for the metal gasket to the heads? and also found some reading on the rear trunk/hood emergency release. Both jobs for this spring when it warms up again...

thanks for all the help!!!

On some cars (I forget specific years now) the rear latch is spring loaded so when the cable breaks, the latch pops open. I think early models were this way (I have a 90 and I checked this out a few years back). Just not sure when they went to un-sprung design.

From the photos I've seen, it appears to be a mid-1991 running change. PET has the newer release cable for the rear as 1991, but my '91 (early) still has the old-style mechanism.

Alex, you driving it in winter? If so, you MAY want to tackle that project sooner than later - relatively quick job for rear cable to drivers size indicator light.
For frunk, I put it behind drivers wheel well - so have to pull wheel and remove wheel well cover.
As others mentioned, I used brake cable from Canadian tire and metal crimps to make loops.
Good luck, have fun!

Default Another option

If you follow the line from the front trunk handle, it passes above the pedals. I gave that a yank and the trunk opened right up.

I always get in the frunk before I close it. That way I can use the emergency release inside the frunk to get it back open.

It was smart to lock your kid inside the frunk in case something like that happens
