Good typres for a 964
 

I am after some 205/55R16's for my 964. I am a new 964 owner. Does anyone have some suggestions for good tyres. I use the car every day.

You might try posting this on the 964 board - especially as a lot of 964 owners are Brits and the tires available in the USa are not necessarily available there (and vice versa). That being said, tires (or tyres) are a personal prefference and you'll probably get 5 different opinions from 5 people. A nice place to start is the tire rack web site. Your choice will come from the "ultimate performance", "high performance" or "competition" categories. Your choice will depend on how you drive your car and the money you want to spend. Bridgestone SO2A's are nice tires but so are the RE730 or RE750 if you are only doing street driving. If you autocross or do DE events, you may want different tires.

Poor dears confused a little, this is the 964 board.

I'm using Bridgstone S02's N3 flavour, very happy thus far, 17 inch rims (insert joke here) 205F 255R cost £525.

I'd also recommend SO2s. Had them before, and they offer pretty good grip.

I am having two SO2 205/55 ZR16 N3s fitted at Micheldever on Tuesday. £81 each all-in. Recomended.

Gents - thanks for the replies - with further look I will get new typres on the front (same as the back) and get the geometry done and get 4 new ones next time.

I have Bridgestone S02 front and rear. Wear and comfort/grip, are just perfect. Even on track the tyres hold well.

Agree with Roly - had Toyos on an 89 C4 with the Cups (not D90s) and they were terrific.

This may be a dumb quesiton, but do the S02's make a lot of road noise? I have heard that various tires do this after 1,000 miles or more- I had a loaner car that had some sort of Contential tires that were Horrible!- sounded like I was driving on a washboard! Curiously, I had Contenental's on an STS I had with no problems- may have been the style of tire...do the S02's have this problem?

I have S02's and also have no problems.
Road noise mainly dependant on the type of road being driven on. "A" quality roads they are very good - only hear wind noise from the side mirrors at speed!! Concrete/cement roads tend to be very load and noisy due to way they are built - have lines drawn in them to drain water - and act and sound like a continous series of small speed bumps.

On the whole though, very happy with the tyres.

Can't speak for the SO2's, but my SO3's are a mixed bag - great grip but very noisy. I believe Adrian has made mention of Bridgestone noise somewhere in the archives. Anyway, they're about shot now, and I'm thinking of PilotSports for the next $1000 or 8000 miles, whichever comes first. FWIW, I too have a set of Toyo Proxes on D90's in the garage. The wheels are pristine and the tires only a few hundred miles before I bought the Cups. Very cheap (beer money) to anyone who wants to pick them up in the Boston area.

The S02's are not noisy. I've been running them for over 3 years and 3 sets (both S02 and S02A's). All are quiet.

The last I checked, S02s are no longer on sale in North America. Is this an Europe thing? We have s03s instead. I like 'em. especially in the wet. great grip on dry too. i did a few autoXs and track days with it. Noise will always be associated with tires that have large thread blocks. get a yoko avs db-whatever if you want quiet tires.
