Default They tried to steal my car

While parked in a subter garage where I live, the car is unlocked (so you don't have to replace the glass) and someone tried to cram a screwdriver into the ignition and make off with the car. They walked right by a 993 TurboS to get to mine but couldn't get the car started. Most likely as the battery was disconnected.

They popped off the little black circle that the key goes into and damaged the ignition so badly that the key only goes in part way and will not turn, so the car cannot be started.

I haven't been into the shop yet but they are telling me all new ignition from the stealer, new keys so door locks and glovebox also rekeyed: about $1800. Possibly, if not damaged too severely the ignition could come , out and the blockage removed but won't know till it is out.

Anyone know an alternative? I was thinking of getting a second hand ignition and a locksmith to rekey it to the existing keys. Is that possible even?

Good news is I still have the car, whatever the fix will be it will include a kill switch.
This was in a well it and gated subter garage with cameras BTW.

You got lucky.

I had to have my ignition replaced and the doors re-keyed. Was about the same 1800 you were quoted.
Go through your car’s records, there may be a card with the lock number on it. I was given one with my new lock set. Long shot for sure.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune but glad they did not get your 964. Yes, the ignition switch from Porsche is ridiculously expensive. I did not want to pay that amount, so I put an electronic push button start module instead. Not as pure as the key and certainly not for everyone, but more secure.
Here is the system I have (https://advancedkeys.com/Prod_AK105B.html), it has been flawless thus far.

1800 is ridiculous. total thievery. the switch is 120 bucks.
on a budget? use the original keys for access to car and glovebox.

No, the price I was quoted was the entire ignition stalk and keys are not expensive but taking the door lock off is.

It remains to be seen if we can get away with just the ignition switch itself (much cheaper).

How is taking the door locks out expensive? Takes 30 minutes in the dark.
Ignition lock/barrel/switch needs the bolts drilled out, which is more time consuming.

Unfortunately that is the switch. It appears they damaged the steering column lock. This sucks. at least they didn't damage the car.

You can pick up the lock for a lot less. It is a PITA to replace and requires the purchase of special screws that sheer the heads off during the installation.

Might be worth having an independent do it for you and you supply the parts. You can have the door locks rekeyed as well or a competent lock smith should be able to rekey the column lock IIRC.

there was no reference to steering lock, when i posted . : )
still a total rip off, imho.
i would buy a used one, if that is the case. not exactly brain surgery to install it.

Too bad you didn't lock your car. That makes for a far more tempting target. Sure they can break the glass, but that makes unwanted noise, and also, a locked car is another level of deterrent. $1800 for what they broke is far more than any glass repair.

Glad they didn't make off with your 964

Is this not covered by your insurance?

Had same deal deal a few years back. The would be thief also damaged my steering (turn signal) stalk. Door handle and lock, ignition, stalk - all covered.

It was a pain towing it with the steering locked towards the curb.

I would love to see pics of the kit installed in your car.
