Dropping Engine- Tricks???
I am dropping my engine to do a little work on it, but have reached a stumbling point. Have disconnected everything suppose to. But, have only been able to get engine to separate about ½ - ¾ inch from transmission. Is there a magic angle that you lower the engine to and it will work free. I have tried blocking trans so it stays in one position, not blocking trans so it lowers with engine , all don't seem to make much difference.
I can move the trans with a pry bar but it pops back.
For those of you that have dropped your own engines what issues did you have and how did you solve????
Right now thinkinging I may have to go back and drop Trans with engine just to get it out.
IDEAS???

Gus, I wouldn't even attempt to separate them in situ. I would drop eng/trans together as I had difficulty w/a seized clutch fork tube that wouldn't let go. Can't imagine what that would have been like with limited wrench space.

Drop the engine and tranny together. Then separate them when they are on the floor out of the car. To separate the tranny, you have to remove the pivot shaft for the clutch throw out arm.

Gus You need to remove the clutch fork shaft (detailed on page 10-12 on ffc's link below) to separate the engine and gearbox, this can be a bear to remove even on the bench never mind in the limited space with the engine and box still in the car.
If you can I would remove box and engine together as refitting the cross shaft and fork with the gearbox still in the car is mega-ballache.

I dropped my engine and trans for other work, and yes, removing the clutch fork shaft can be a challenge. It took a while, even out of the car.
Likewise, I just watched my indy mate the trans and engine on a 993, and alignment is key to getting it back together. He showed me a couple of tricks, but again, I wouldn't want to try and do this "in the car". I'm sure someone can, but I wouldn't want to try.
Should have my motor back in a couple of weeks, and then I can give a firsthand account of mating them back together. : )
