RM, Tom PLutz weighed a 1 piece and a 2 piece rotor and he barely saw any weight difference. It would make sense if the weight savings was substantial but from what I remember it was in ounces.
The only part that is different is the hat and the factory 2 piece and the 1 piece both have similar hats but the offset is different. With 2 pieces, you also have those pesky bolts as well so I am not sure you can lower your unsprung weight to half.
I thought going to aftermarket hats would give me some additional savings and bought the kokeln hats only to find vibration with them. They were very nice about it and refunded me back my full cost though.
Take care.

Will this include the rotor "hats" for 1986 944 Turbo?

Asahi,

there would be different kits for the 86 cars, but that would be one of the choices....

If you have an 86 as I do the hat can become an issue withe the taller 94 3.6 turbo rotor. It is almost up against the ball joint. It doesn't hit but it is CLOSE. So far I've had no problems.

Hmmm... I'm very interested. After my experience at some DEs with the stock '87 (non S) brakes, I was going to upgrade with used S4 calipers and new rotors. Count me in.

Just as an FYI, I put together a bill of materials (BOM) for a 928 GTS Big-Black system with prices from Sunset Imports in April 2003.

http://www.weissach.net/944S2_BrakeUpgrade.html

I doubt if the prices have changed significantly and it includes prices for pads, brake lines, etc. I think that the price difference between Big-Black calipers and Big-Red calipers is not significant.

Karl.

Since I know a little about the Big Reds........HE HE. The 3.6 rotor and the 993 rotor are almost identical in weight. The 3.6 rotor will fit over an 86' hub but the 993 rotor will not.The 86' cars will require the hubs being turned down on a lathe to make them fit.We would be happy to do this for $100 if you guys need it.The other option is a custom hat. All the cars will require adaptors to get the Big Reds calipers to bolt up to the spindles. The 3.6 rotor will require a different adaptor then the 993 caliper. We have made adaptors for certains years of cars to use the 3.6 rotor. We have the adaptors for all years of cars to use the 993 rotors. BTW, we could offer the whole package for under $1000 if there was enough people interested. Hope this helps.

Still did not see an answer though, will the 996 TT calipers work for a kit like this?

An aluminum hat for the two piece rotor is what I was talking about when I said "to cut the unsprung weight in half". I've seen stock one piece rotors/hats that were literally twice the weight of a aluminum hat/upgraded rotor two piece combo. Audi S4 for example.

Again, why couldn't/shouldn't we utilize the 996 monobloc calipers vs. the two piece Big Reds?

I am really starting to dislike you guys. In preparation I am beginning to look for new wheels/tires. This in only bad because I HAVE new wheels/tires that have ZERO miles since installed. Powder coated white D90s and brand new S-02s. My wife is gonna kill me.

I'm in for a group buy, we should definitely use a vendor that posts here though, SFR would be a good one to do it with again.
