Default Oil pickup and return tube

Looking at the catalog it shows an o-ring for the return tube and shows a boss sticking out where it would go. But on my return tube and block both surfaces are flat? Do some return tubes not use o-rings and some do? Not that a leaky return tube would hurt but I want to assemble it with the o-ring if it's supposed to use one or whatever is correct.

What catalog is that...?

944/2 from official Porsche website shows no o'ring at return pipe to lower crankcase location.

http://www.porsche.com/all/media/pdf...88_KATALOG.pdf

Edit - Early 82-85 shows o'ring. Long shot from memory, but if your lower crankcase (early only) requires the o'ring, it will be machined (a step in dia.) to accept it, if late, it will have a slightly raised boss for a rest.

I always cross reference all the catalogs I have. I believe that picture showing it is from at 944_2 89 91 catalog. Where the 85 88 one doesn't show it. Just curious if the o-ring is for a specific return tube or what. Or why it was added? My tube is flat on the bottom with a small notch that lines up with the girdle which is flat with the raised alignment notch. If no o-ring is used, does it go on dry? With loctite 574? Or? Dont see much on the return tube in general.

Flat with alignment notch is late, dry, no sealant.

Early has o'ring, late does not, so they went away from that design it seems.

DO you have engine manual...?

What year and engine..?

K, gotcha.

Went check manual for 8v all years and 968, hardly a mention of the return pipe at all, if any.

Rarely as it is, when I am, around here, anything "oiling" catches my attention.

Take care,

I bought that seal few days ago from porsche dealer and it was less than $1 delivered next day. My 89 turbo return line has a boss there but not nearly as long as on the drawing.

I have few fllat ones too, That one has no gasket or oring and no engine I opened had any kind of gasket if flat return pipe design was used.

The one on the picture above is off of 89 turbo and has a groove for oring. Oring on it is OE #40 from the diagram above.
