Tin coat is there only to protect (ferrostan) pistons against oxidation before installation. After that they are oiled. That coating is only to simplify shelf life. It looks worn when you put it out of engine though and I got rid of few 951 sets of pistons as scrap just because of that only to get a laugh from an old school porsche technician.

Youre probably beter off with 200k mile 951 pistons than with new ferroprint mahles. Checkout last few pages of 3.0T thread.
