Which of the following apply? Tony, kind of a broad question; can you narrow it down? I can say that I've gone through every mixing section on the motor becuase one gave out on me after the other.
To my knowledge there are three major areas the 951 motor can mix oil and water at. The head gasket, turbo, and o-rings around the metal shaft inside the oil cooler housing. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the most effecient way of finding out where the leak is coming from is to do a leak-down test, then pressurize your water section and pressurize your oil section. See where your numbers are on your leak down test, then see where you find a loss in pressure; oil or water.
I believe once these tests are completed you should have a good idea of where the mixing is coming from.

My original (stock '90) one failed at 149k miles in Nov 2001. Car was stock apart from a Lindsey Boost Enhancer, decat and K&N panel filter at that time.

Blew 2 gaskets 5000 km apart!
Both stock gaskets with stock studs.
Now I'm going for the MLS gasket and WBo2 to clean up the A/F-ratios!

Mine hasn't gone yet (I guess - I'm occasionally losing some coolant, but so far I think it's just a leaking hose or something like that) ... but when it does, is it a good idea to replace the head studs with some aftermarket item (raceware?)?

Yup, I've been through a few HG's since I bought the car in '97

1. Stock 89-951 with "superchips" and bleeder valve- ran at 20psi with stock inj's racing a WSR Trans Am (beat him) spring '99

2. Replaced the HG with WFR, but reused the stock head bolts- lasted about 3 months. June '99

3. Pulled head off when changing rings/rod bearings etc. during last years' major upgrades-WFR was trashed at the same spot, the lower part of #4 cyl. Replaced again with WFR. Installed Raceware Studs. Blown in Mar '02, not driven again til Dec '02.

4. Blew HG again when I had the L/R AFM installed wrong- thought I was too rich, but was really leaning out to dangerous limits. Burned the WFR in the same old place; the bottom of #4 cyl. Sep '03

5. Installed Guru Ultimate gasket last month. Multiple runs up to 20 psi, fule mixtures are good, car feels like a jet taking off. I installed the last one (with the copper spray, per Danno's instructions) in 5.5 hours from start of install to test drive. I'm getting too good at doing HG's, but this time I think it's done right, and for good!

Doug

89-951 Kokeln STG V Turbo, L/R: MAF2/WG/BOV, 52# Bosch inj's,new rings & rod bearings, eng mounts, adj FPR @41psi (for now) and an empty wallet.

84 Subaru GL 1.8 n/a---talk about a real hot rod! 145k (airport car)

90 Maxima- daily driver with 200k miles, doesn't burn a drop of oil!

02 Jetta 1.8t yes, even my wife has a turbo!

02 Boeing 737-800W- 27,000#/thrust per side (gets pretty good mileage!

Copper is not a common head gasket combo run on these cars.

Are you running a solid copper head gasket? How are your results? Any water problems... leaks?

I've replaced the stock head gasket at around 180k miles. The head was corroded through the gasket, it was not blown. Since then I've been running around 17 psi on the stock turbo +chips and turbo back open exhaust. Car's currently at 209k miles and so far no problems. That's w/the stock (and old) studs.

Stock, read original, let go at 89,000 miles. Tear down revealed corosion had pretty much eaten away original material.

MLS gasket after 30 miles, simply wouldn't seal #1 cylinder for no obvious reason. New WFR gasket has lasted almost 3000 miles with no signs of water in the chambers.
