I was reading through another post about what transaxle fluid to use. I did get a bit confused. I am thinking about draining and refilling mine and I'm wondering what is the recommended fluid.

The car is a 1986 944 Turbo that didn't come from the factory with an LSD transaxle, but according to the previous owner, he swapped an LSD in on this car. It has over 150,000 miles on it but I have no idea how many miles are on that transaxle. It does have fluild dripping down off of it though which concerns me a bit.

From the other post I was reading, apparently I should stay away from GL5 in favor of GL4. I don't know what those terms are, but I've seen on bottles where they have both GL4 and GL5 on them. Should I steer clear of oil that list both? The bottle did also say something about using on non-synchro transmissions. I didn't think any manual transmissions were non-synchro??? Then again, I am no trained mechanic either....

So my question is, with my transmission setup, which oils could be used in it?

This is what Dave Lindsey Recommended and what I use in my LSD cars... I bought mine a couple of years ago.. They make a lightweight oil as well.. Give Dave a Call..

201 has a friction modifier so it's good for clutch type limited slips to give a bit of slip on engagement of the clutch plates so you don't get chatter. Certainly no problem using it in torsen type limited slips or even non limited slip cars. If you want a gear oil with no friction modifier you may want to try Redline 75W90NS.

swepco all day for clutch type. Redline, motul, and torco for torsen type.

They way I read the thread it sounds like he swapped the entire transaxle to an LSD transaxle.....did not pull out the diff and put in after market......is how I am reading the thread.

To the OP could you clarify?

I think KEV951's advice is more accurate.

The stock unit is a clutch type is it not?

944 factory limited slip units were clutch type.
