The best Starter for the 951

What is the best starter for our cars? I have had issues with both of my stock Bosch units and would like to try something new. Please let me know if other owners have had better luck with a different brand of starter.

Thanks

What issues have you had?
Can't think of anyone ever complaining about the starter before.

There is an aftermarket unit available that is smaller/lighter.

Do you use the starter heat shield?

kyle951 03-18-2017 04:40 PM

Guys, I appreciate the input.

The problem that I am having is that about every 6 or so times I start the car I end up getting a slight hesitation and then the car turns over. I have checked the battery and terminals and everything checks out fine. I even checked the ring gear to see if it was possibly the cause.

I have the same Bosch starter on my 87 951 and it has never given me this type of problem. I am still checking some things trying to diagnose the problem.

Also. I did look at that IMI starter and would consider it if it truly helps.

Are you getting starter 'kick-back'?

Is your bellhousing completely slotted under the speed and reference sensors?

There was a Porsche technical bulletin about this.

I'm installing the updated sensor bracket with sleeve and hopefully this will solve my 'hard starting'.

NCLA951 03-18-2017 09:08 PM

Once in a blue moon I'll get starter kick back, even with the sleeve and no slots. Had no idea what it was for a while, and didn't happen enough to warrant worry.

what's the part number for the sleeve? anyone know?

944.101.320.00 - Sleeve

The updated bracket has clearance for the sleeve, so you need that part too. 944.101.321.07

You can see the difference between the two. The new one also has an extra 'B'.

Has installing the updated bracket with sleeve solve your issues? Currently trying to fix my intermittent start issues with VEMS. Thanks

Great to hear! Did you install new bracket in car or with motor out and how hard was the install and sensor gaping?

Engine in car, but I had the intake off. The hardest part was loosening up the socket head bolts - I believe I had success using three extensions from under the car along the bellhousing. I replaced these bolts with standard hex-head type on reassembly.

Gaping wasn't a problem using a thin washer temporarily glued to the sensor. It is pretty tight in there though, and I was almost certainly swearing.

Turn the motor to tdc and install the sensor with the washer to set the gap, tighten down the bracket applying light pressure to bracket preventing it from moving away. Remove washer from the sensor. Probably wise to replace both sensors while your in there since they are a know weak point on our cars. Much easier to do with the intake removed.
