absolutely blown away!
I've been a car enthusiast my entire life (and I mean ENTIRE!) and have come across cult cars left and right. You know the type, where it seems like every owner knows everything about that car (and nothing about others, it seems) and place it above all other cars. Now I've also been a Porschephile for a while now and am long awaiting the day when I get my 951 (which should be within a year!). I have fallen in love with this damn thing.
But some of the things I've read after becoming a member of rennlist still just baffle me. People who have owned 911s, 930s, 996s and more (one guy owns/owned a Ferrari!!) but who still absolutely adore there 944 and/or 951! That just blows me away how such a small (and seemingly forgoten) piece of sports car history can affect people exposed to said higher sports cars. Personally, I would have thought that after owning a 911, 930, or a damn Ferrari (as I am also a Ferrari-nut) that I would lose some interest in the 944/951. But many, however, say they are glad to drive their 944/951s after their other Porsches, etc.!!
WOW!!
Feel free to express any personal stories to help my "quest" to learning more about how this baby-porsche whoops so much ***

go to the main 924/944/951 forum and find the 5th gear "Best of the 80's" download. It shows Tiff Needel going over the 951. He loves it and misses it.
Derek Bell also raced the 924GTR at Le Mans, and he has a 924 CGT which he loves as well.
If I respect the opinions of any car guys, it's these two chaps.

It's on the 4th page back of the 924/944/951/968 forums.
if you open the thread and view all the pages, there is a link to just the 330i/951 part with Tiff.

I had a perfect 85 911 and a new Rx7tt, both were great great cars. The 951 holds its own with either though (faster actually), mainly because it is sooo easy to coax power out of it.

...and that's one reason why I can't wait to get it! thanks for sharing Tom.
Rich, I found the video, thanks a bunch, I love Tiff and the crew from Top Gear and 5th Gear, especially when he praises a car I'm going to own!

Three Wheelin'
I was lined up at the grid for a DE on Sunday and there was a brand new black 911 Turbo lined up next to me. After a minute or so the guy gets out of his car and comes over to me and says I love your car, he tells me the 911 Turbo is neat but he can't wait to get a 951 and make it a dedicated track car. I ask him if he has owned a 951 before and he tells me he hasn't but that he has just loved the look of the car since he was in college. He askes me how much power my car puts down and I tell him its 320rwhp. He just grins and says "its still a 4cyl right?" I nod and he just shakes his head in wonder, says good luck and nice to meet you then goes back to his car.
These cars sure do have some dedicated followers.

I've had my 951 for about 8 years now and can personally attest to how much the car gets under your skin. This weekend I sold my '00 M coupe to finance a more practical "family" car for my new wife. Ordinarily such a move is not greeted with enthusiasm, but I was actually happy about it, because it meant I could get the 951 back as my daily driver (SWMBO has been using it since her POS Jeep died over 3 months ago).
Sure the BMW is far more refined, with a great engine that makes torque everywhere and sounds wonderful, but when pushed hard I always felt let down by the car. Compared to my 133k mile 951, the steering was lifeless, the suspension had lousy control, the rear end had poor grip, the acceleration never left you muttering a respectful "damn..." and the forward visibility left a lot to be desired when looking for the next apex.
The 951 is kind of the opposite. When viewed as a daily driver, the engine is comparatively coarse, the ride is stiff, the road noise is high, and the turbo lag is annoying in the city, but begin to drive it hard and all is forgiven. The car flows from corner to corner and always leaves me smiling and wishing the journey could continue for just a little bit longer. Whereas I always viewed the M coupe as an underachiever, the 951 never ceases to amaze me with it's performance -- even after 8 years and 70k miles.
