Default Revs while in neutral, and I'm not doing it!!!!

Ok, this has happened to me a few times now and has gotten me worried. The scenario, I'm cruising down the highway at about 60mph in gear when the stop light turns red so I decide just to coast to it. So I push the clutch in at speed, put the shift lever in the neutral position and let the clutch out the engine just revs freely until I push the clutch back in then it goes back to the normal idle at about 1k rpm. What is this, is it the infamous TPS or maybe worse like the clutch?

Ha, I wish. It actually did it to me once on the way back from 944fest. It doesn't happen very often, just every once in a while.

Is the cruise control engaging? Try disconnecting the cruise brain and see if the problem goes away.

The cruise controll linkage will bind up and do that crap somtimes. Oil/clean all the cruise controll linkage and thorottle linkage. Also make sure that crappy vdo cruise controll brain isnt going crazy like most of them do.

Thanks, will give the cruise a shot. Its been happening quite a bit lately, and does seem like the only time it happens is after I've been using the cruise control.

Yes, I actually use the cruise on the highway so I don't get myself in trouble.

Yes, on long trips. Works fine when it's hot out.

my '86 951 was doing kinda weird slow rpm drops, IIRC when I dabbed some silicon sealer on the 'adjust screw' on the throttle body it helped. I know that fixed an intermittent high-idle problem (the adjust screw was leaking air that was bypassing the throttle body). Dab some grease on there and see what happens.
