Fitment of M030 brakes onto an 86?
 

Hey guys, I'm considering a set of M030 calipers and rotors + adapters to make them bolt to non-M030 spindles. My question is this: I have an 86 951, and I know the rotor mounting setup is different from the 87+ cars. Will the m030 calipers and rotors still work with the adapters and my 86T spindles and hubs?

Edit: I think the rears will bolt on with the adapters but for the fronts I'll need the LR big red rotor hats and 993TT rotors, is that right? I know the GTS/993TT calipers will also bolt to the same radial caliper adapters; if I upgraded in the future what rotor would I run? The same 993TT/GTS rotor or a different one?

Rear M030 brakes are the same as the standard Turbo / S2 brakes.

For the front, I don't think anyone makes rotors to work with the setup you describe. I am sure you could use the LR early hub hats and find some rotors that will make it work, but the only kits that are out there work with the slightly larger 993 TT Calipers / Rotors (Big Red or Big Black vs the Medium Black M030 stuff).

As Ian says the rears are the same for M030 and pre '88 951/S2 apart from the OEM pads which were a different part # and I assume different compound. I just use 968 M030 drilled discs.

You can get adapters from Racers Edge that will allow you to run the 951S calipers and discs on the std non M030 spindle/hub set up. I run a slightly different offset adapter that runs the M030 calipers with the 993 front discs. I prefer this both because the OEM 993 discs are drilled and sensibly priced, but also the 993 discs have same diameter and thickness but have an offset that maintains the same clearances between the steering ball joint and the inner face of the brake disc. Using the 951S discs on the non M030 hubs makes that clearance pretty tight. No contact but too hot for the steering ball joint for my liking.

In your picture those are late hubs (brake disc on the outside) 86 951s use the early hub (brake disc inside of the hub.

Sorry ... I thought the 86 turbo adopted the same hub and disc arrangement as the late offset cars. Ignore me :)
