Default 951S Wheel Mystery

Anyone recognise the wheels on this 1990 951S UK car? They are described as light weight Club Sport Wheels but they don't seem to have the quirk on the top of the cut outs ... and they don't look like D90's either. Also no width/offset embossed by tyre valve.

Strange ... my guess is that they are Club sport wheels with the quirk either ground off or filled. Or some form of replica??

They're not anodized, either, and appear to be painted silver. If I had to guess, I'd say they are replicas because A) they're missing the accent above the spokes, and B) because they have a non-factory finish.

I'm also curious as to why this 1990 Turbo has the old style spoiler. The 1990 model year turbos (and 1991 S2) should have the bridge spoiler.

Not really. in usa the cars are different. in australia most of the 944s (regardless of year) are wings not the bridge.

My understanding was that the bridge spoiler was '91 model year only. Wheels remain a mystery ... I've never seen CS replicas ... it says in the listing that he wheels were refurbished soI'm guessing that explains the colour ... but the absence of the detailing near the top out of the cut outs still puzzles me,

Does not appear to be 951 Club Sport. As you noted, missing some detail (called out in green below)

Ask for a better photo. They could be but its really hard to see at that angle. If they have the cut out then they are club sport rims. Mine are painted black with a polished lip. And I got lucky and scored the 8" wide club sports for the front wheels off a 928S4. Never seen that 8" style before I got them. They are always swear cap rims but forged. I was thinking someone took these 8" and had a machinist copy from a club sport rim. But the gentleman I bought them from said they were factory 928S4 rims.

Real 8" club sports painted black with a polished lip.

This is my car. I found this video a year after I bought the car and fix it all up. It had spun #2 at Sonoma raceway(AKA sears point or Infineon all the same track) but look at those cool rims.

Yep I've seen the D90 9" 8" combo on 928's. Very nice set up for a 944 . 8" clubsport is indeed a rare bird!

These ones remain a mystery. Here is a good pic.

Mystery wheel

D90 ... nothing like it. My personal favourite

Mine's an Oz-delivered, January 1990 build and it has the bridge spoiler. We never got '91 model out here...

Agreed ... I think that is it. Makes them look sort of strange ... sort of D90 CS hybrid and probably not as nice as either.

Abeit dated, I am partial to the Club Sport on the 951. Special and limited to the 88 & 89 951 & some 928's, and, it's stronger than the cast D90. CS is a wheel no 911 ever had, turbo or not.

Funny you should say stronger than a D90 .. just had a call from a wheel shop saying one of a pair of 9" D90's I bought off ebay is buckled

No wheel is in fallable, but forged is definitely stronger than cast. Cast albeit is a little lighter. Trades for everything.

Here's an example; these are mine, (a spare set), on CL priced accordingly. https://atlanta.craigslist.org/nat/pts/5250907973.html

Since it appears a repair was performed, something happened to one of the fronts. The repair is virtually undetectable to me, even in's polished state. I've had the wheels for years in storage until a friend who owns a body shop pointed out to me that a repair was made at some point.
