Default Engine whinning sound!!

Hey List,

Ever since the PO had the car, there is a whinning sound that just bugs the heck out of me
Imagine having radio AM frequency whining sound when you accelerate, but at front on the engine. Not as loud as a slipping belt..
If youre inside the car with the A/C you dont hear it.

I did test removing the balance shaft belts and the sound went away, but at the last rebuild I put EVERYTHING new and torqued the balance shaft housing strictly as the workshop manual says and it still there!!

Anyone have this??

I recall this sound when I replaced my timing belt... Once it worked in it went away.

Are you sure your balance belt isn't just too tight?
They scream when they are tensioned wrong.
It should be pretty quiet, to the point you can barely hear it whine at idle, from inside the car.

If it goes away when you remove the balance shaft belt, call me crazy but....

If you tension the balance shaft belt toward the middle to upper end of the factory spec (i.e. above 3.5 on the gauge), it will whine every time -- even after a full rebuild with all new parts.

hmm always thought it might have been some sort of distortion or warping on the lower shaft...even had it verified by the local machinist.
Definetly will try it out this weekend.
It could be that final "just in case/its an old nut/just a bit more/there you go" slight torque we tend to do
thks

Balance shafts belt is too tight. I have 3 P9201 meters and even with them belts go too tight. When you have replaced 100+ belts you know the correct tightness

Can I get partial credit for changing the same belt 100+ times?

Default Balance shaft belt noise

When you replaced the belt, did you use a credit card off the roller in the middle? The lugs on the new belt need to wear in a bit as the become more adjusted to the notches in rest of the gear/roller train.
