Default AC Compressor Source

You could try Rockauto. Look them up at www.rockauto.com. Search for your specific car and the part you need. They have an excellent information cut sheet and pricing. Next give Vertex Auto or Ecklers a call they all rep good parts and have excellent service. Zims Auto would be another source. Check with them to see if you need a receiver / drier and what gaskets. You can do it all with probably one call. Don't let AC work scare you it isn't that tough.

Enter the new century. These cars respond very well to the 134 upgrade. I did it probably 8 years ago with a Kuehl compressor and haven't touched it since.

griffiths.com seems like a good resource for compressors, kits, and information, and if you have questions, including choice of refrigerant, they will respond to emails. As I understand it, if you are replacing the compressor and drier anyway it is a good time to change refrigerant to R134a.

I have the same need. My compressor mount is broken, causing alternator belt to slip. I hate to replace the compressor for that since I don't use the AC much but I guess there is no alternative.

I prefer factory stuff too. Do you think the factory "OEM" unit is worth 3x the "OEM Supplier" unit, and if so, why?

The OEM supplier to Porsche was NipponDenso.
The "OEM" unit is remanufactured by Denso.
You'd be getting the same exact part if you bought the "Genuine Porsche" part at 3-4x the cost.

I had already rebuilt all my AC hoses, replaced all the AC o-rings, and installed a new condenser and had a new receiver dryer ready. To actually install the compressor and re-charge took maybe an hour.

I've probably spent almost $1000 to completely refurbish my AC system, but every time it's hot outside the system works flawlessly and I drive in cool comfort. It makes you drive calmer/in a better mood too if you get stuck in traffic or whatever too.

AC makes you a happier person lol...can you put a price on that?

I have installed one of the different-compressor retrofit kits before and the kit was nice. It worked really well for a while, but the compressor used was a sort of knock-off of the Keuhl/Sanden unit and failed within a year. So the compressor makes or breaks the kit and the Keuhl piece should be the "real deal".

Any idea whether they were using R12 or R134a? I guess if the latter there would have been a sticker somewhere in the engine compartment.

this might be a good solution for me...

Did you retain R12 or convert to R134a?

I did at the beginning of the year. Got a rebuilt compressor from 944online.com that came with a drier. I ordered a oring kit and swapped everything at once. To convert to 134a all you need is the Ether oil (maybe $8 at Autozone) and a r12 to r134a fitting adapter ($7). And if you get the 944online one it comes pre oiled with Ether, which can be used with r12 or 134a. My car has the old style lines without the easy access port right under the hood. I was able to use the retro fitting right at the compressor and it worked great. Perfect ac now! I think it took about 28 oz of r134a from completely empty with the new drier. I didn't evac my ac system, but with all new pieces it wasn't needed in my opinion, especially when the old compressor was empty for years. My ac works so well I have to turn it off half way home from work due to the chillz lol

If I were in Louisianna, I would order from www.paragon-products.com. They are in Corpus Christy, and they are as competitive as anyone. Great honest people. I've spent several thousands with them through the years.
