Default how to tell a turbo from a turbo s?

I bought an 88 turbo and don't know if its a turbo or a turbo s. Are there any tell tale signs or can the vin tell me anything? I don't think its too easy to tell the difference in turbo hot sides?

This might help with the turbo indentification.

But I wouldn't rely on that, since many 951s have had turbos changed. I think the VIN is the most reliable way to check. (try here)The M44/52 engine code is what you're looking for. M44/51 is a standard Turbo.

Other visible things would be: chassis braces in the engine bay (do a few searches and you'll find pics of what to look for), height adjustable Koni yellow struts, and interior options such as the 10 speaker system & split rear seats. I think all 88 S cars had headlight washers too. The front brakes on the S are bigger but I'm not sure you'd be able to tell if you are not familiar with the standard ones. The original S wheels were Club Sport wheels, so if they are there that's another hint. The transaxle should be an LSD with an external oil cooler loop if it's an S. You can see the cooler easily, and you can check for an LSD by getting the rear wheels in the air and turning one by hand. If it's an LSD, the other side will turn in the same direction. With an open diff, the opposite side will spin in the opposite direction.

As far as I know, 88 Turbo S cars not in the Silver Rose colours are rare.

Look for the triangular frame brackets just forward of the strut towers.

Pull your connecting rods and see if they're forged... JK. Get your option codes from under rear hatch. M44.52.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN (turbo)= 215 hp up to 1988 (turbo S)=247 hp 1988, turbo 89-91

Engine:
TS has larger turbine blade and higher a/r ratio, same compressor blade and more boost (T= k26/6, TS= k26/8 )
TS has different computer In addition to changing the turbocharger a different DME (Digital Motor Electronics) control unit is used with different fuel and ignition curve families. A different knock and charge pressure control unit KLR is also used to increase the boost to 1.82 bar absolute (11.89 psi boost) an increase of 0.07 bar from the 1.75 bar absolute (10.88 psi boost) of the T
TS has 247 vs 217 hp for T and higher torque for TS
TS has baffled oil pan and extended oil pick-up (this was an upgrade on T and TS from late 87)

Suspension:
TS has koni adjustable shocks and sport suspension with larger sway bars and etc
TS has adjustable spring perches,
TS has body structure strengthening brackets,
TS has stiffer bushings in suspension parts,
TS has higher rate springs(190lb/in TS front vs 160lb/in T front)

Brakes and Wheels:
TS has larger stock tires and wheels
TS has huge brakes (big blacks)
TS has club sport wheels
TS has ABS standard,

Drive Train:
TS has transaxle cooler- this is not peculiar to TS as there were coolers in other years
TS has limited slip differential with thicker plates,
TS has hardened 1st and 2nd gears and hardened transaxle shafts

Other Stuff:
TS has 10 speaker stereo,
TS has split-back rear seats
TS rear track is 1" wider

In short, the turbo s cars are more full-out racing machines than turbo cars and were developed with data from the turbo cup road racing series in Europe.

Willard, you forgot the chassis differences: the triangular gussets Darwin points out and the rolled rear fender lips.

And, in '88 the majority of the Turbo Ss were painted in Silver Rose Metallic and had the Studio plaid interiors.

I also imagine the 180MPH instrument cluster debuted in the TS.

The TS was also standard with dual air bags.

So what if I have found an '87 Turbo that the VIN states has the M44.52 motor in it? Which it states. I always thought there were no 87 S's in the US?

My two '87 951s both have 180mph speedos. I think it debuted in 1987 because of the 172mph 928 S4.

Willard, first of all many thanks - that is a pretty comprehensive list that normally does not show up in these recurring threads.

I did not realize the 88 TS forward had the baffled oil and extended pick-up tube - I've never seen mine off. Thanks and I'm glad I didn't go buy/fab one!
