Ceramic Coat Downpipe???
I'm in heavy, "while-I'm-at-it" mode and was wondering if, while I have my turbo out, there are any good reason(s) to ceramic coat the exhaust downpipe? (Especially if that's the only piece of thee system I do.) Plusses? Minuses? TIA

The good reason is you have it out, why not do the crossover pipe, headers, and the turbine housing also????

I have my 3" downpipe ceramic coated. I also have the exhaust manifold, intake manifold, and cross over pipe coated. It makes a noticeable difference in engine bay temperature. I am not sure what coating just the downpipe would do .. but it certainly cant hurt ... is it worth the price of coating .. not sure. Good luck.

There are a lot of coaters out there. Do a search for "ceramic coating" in google or yahoo and you'll find at least a 1/2 dozen. I had a local guy coat my headers, downpipe and crossover pipes. Total cost was around $200 if I remember and they came back in a nice grey finish. You can get the "jet-hot" coating in that shiny chrome like substance, but apparently it starts to flake off and discolor around 1500F. I run an exhaust temp gauge and I can tell you a few inches in front of the cat it gets to that temp under full throttle abuse. Stick with the black, cast iron, grey or white high temp colors.
Results. Worth every penny. Lowered underhood temps dramatically. No real HP gains, but the underhood temps are drastically lower. |
I had mine done at Jethot. I had the JET-HOT 2000 black coating put on inside and out. I dont recall the price per piece .. but I think it is well worth it.

The intake cooled off about 20-25° on the runners and areas between the runners. HTH. |
Thanks for the responses/ideas... got a local industrial coater (powder, ceramic, etc.) I've been using who's very reasonable... guess he gets at least the down pipe...

I recently did the manifolds and downpipes off of my Callaway 928....simply for the reason of preservation....the parts don't exist any more.
It works well...just go with the 200 degree matte black finish inside and out. They are supposed to help with spool up, but I don't feel much difference. |
Be aware that there's some controversy regarding coating the intake manifold. Some people beleive(me included) that coating it actually insulates the heat and prevents the aluminum from dissipating heat as well. Take a look in the archive and make your own decision. Plenty of info there.

Mike, I remember all of that, as I was in for coating it. My point was how can somthing that is running 20-25° cooler(both runs were 30-40 minutes, ambient air was within +/- 5° on the days of measurement, non-coated and coated) retain more heat? You know maybe, maybe it will not dissipating heat as fast as a non-coated one but then again, it doesn't get as hot as one either.

anyone have oil temp #s before and after coatings....figuring your hot side is now running "hotter" are you cooking your oil. do you see any difference in your temp gauge, im guessing engine temp would go down quite a bit if engine bay temps drop. i'm planning on coating (either ceramic or jet hot) and possibly wrapping w/ header wrap everything from head to turbo.

My oil gauge stays flat no matter how long i am on the track .. I have a large oil cooler and everything is ceramic coated.

I'm new to the 951's, so I'm not sure if this is an issue, but I would also like to know what air temps are coming through the intercooler. Does the ceramic coating help this, as well? Do you experience less heat soak, 944turbo?
I'm hoping to do this when I pull the head this winter, and look forward to lower oil temps, and lower underhood temps. Heat just seems to kill the life span of everything in the engine. -Jon '88 951 |
