was the 4v 944 head an s or s2 unit? and what is the exact difference between those two especially as far as air passage is concerned? eny significant differences between those in other departments? i have a faint memory there was something to do with chain stem or tensioning too?

Actually the 968 head has 2mm larger intake valves along with bigger intake ports. The 968 valves are a terrific upgrade to the S/S2 head. 40mm is even better.

"I was just curious, but now you got my attention"
can you tell something more about the 44s heads being prone to crack and whether there is a simple fix to avoid it? Same for the tensioner tweak - any pictures maybe? I hope i'm not asking for to much.. as I am currently building a 2.5 16v based on an s head, i would by far prefer to be safe than sorry. If the abovementioned have already been discussed, i would be more than happy if you helped me find the relevant thread. Big thanks in advance.

indeed, interesting attitude. Money makes the world go round/money talks. If I may put my two cents in.

To be honest, i agree with Michael on this.. I've received so much info from Rennlist in the last 2 years, the small fee for the membership has been more than worth it!

But still, Michael, I would like to know the numbers!

Here's what Porsche had to say. Unfortunately, I don't know how to identify crack-prone heads nor the replacement heads. Can anyone chime in? It probably has to do with casting around the stud boss.

I don't have the proper photo of tensioner mount reinforcement, but this photo gives the idea. (This photo happens to be a 968 head modified to use the S/S2 tensioner.) The tensioner mount is tied (welded) to the lifter bore to reinforce it. NOTE: FOR EXPERIENCED WELDERS ONLY! OTHERWISE THE LIFTER BORE WILL BE DISTORTED WHICH MUST BE AVOIDED. MAKE SURE YOUR WELDER PEENS THE WELD DURING AND AFTER WELDING TO STRESS RELIEVE IT. HE'LL UNDERSTAND. The cam "girdles" are only needed for radical cam lobe profiles AND above 7500 rpm. No need to consider them otherwise.

Here's another effort to keep the chain happy. It's an oil jet aimed at the cam chain. I'm not convinced it's needed except where the lifter oiling has been blocked off for solid lifters. Otherwise, there's plenty of oil splash for the chain.

Re my comments on membership:

Apparently I came across too strong, which was not my intent. I tried to choose my words carefully to avoid 'bashing', and I certainly didn't mean to be rude. Moreover, I'm not the police; I was only trying to suggest we all chip in.

With unchanged part numbers, I imagine it would be difficult to identify the changes without having both heads side by side. However, as a new owner of a 944S, I'm very curious to know if there are external clues to identify the different heads. I've got an S2 head that suffered tension mount failure and it's not pretty...
