What size cooler for power steering?

Sorry but I'm not getting this, after you have done so much and wyit why would you not do it correctly. $180 is not expensive for something that will likely last 20 years and not detract from resale value as a bodged-up workaround job would. It doesn't take long to remove & replace.

Also, I do think it is a bit of pain to remove the cooler, IMHO.

if you remove the windshield washer bottle the PS cooler comes out much easier.
i would think you could get a small dremel-tool or the like in there to cut the ferrule off. but of course, better to just pull it out for more access.

Interesting how many people are running without a PS cooler without a problem. I ran my track car (305x18 front tires) without a cooler, the fluid got way too hot for my liking. I'm going with a small radiator style cooler. Of course, proper air management (IN/OUT) is a must. Without good air flow, the best cooler will be ineffective.
Anyone used a 968 PS cooler on a 951?
I have been toying with the idea of using a Toyota MR2 electric PS pump. Anyone here is using an electric PS pump?

Can't really see the cooler being necessary for a street car...I don't think my Subaru even has one (but will double check )
Though if you are feeling frisky you can get a really sweet PS cooler off of 80s-90s Volvos (made by Setrab). On the Volvo they are mounted in front of all the radiators...
These have approx. 6mm ID flare fittings and 12 cooling rows. Dimensions are approximately 8.5L x 6T x 1.5W", and the mounting brackets extend out another few inches.
Shown in comparison to 951 engine oil cooler:

The one on my AMG is very compact, bearly 3/4in deep. I'm sure there are many out there these days that could be used instead of the loopdi-doopdi 944 version.

I've changed that line on all three of my cars - more than once on the track car.
It's easy to get to if you pull the right wheel and fender liner, which takes all of five minutes if the car is already in the air.
The need (or not) for a cooler probably depends on ambient temp where you run and track conditions. Plus, if you run AX instead of big tracks it's more likely you'll need one as the pump is being worked harder and the air flow to the rack and lines is less.

The one I have requires 2 power wires, one to wake it up the other to make it run. Mine are switched individually but you could wire the wake up one to the ignition. I modified the coupling to the steel tubing to an a ansi fitting. Don't have a cooler on it tho that may not be a bad idea.

Yes, i am running an electric powered hydraulic power steering pump. You can mount any where you have room, I do not have any headlights so I mounted on the outside frame rail behind where the right headlight was.

Which pump are you using? The one I looked at has an input to alter the pressure. Overly complicated. I like the simpler 2 wires you mentioned.

Thanks Rod. The MR2 unit is not my favorite.
I don't think the Astra is available in the US.
Someone mentioned the Mini, will take a look.

Alternatively looks like 2005+ Volvos had electric PS pumps.

Pressure on one side with the return line at atmospheric.
