Just to give you a background. I have a 1986 944 Turbo with 23mm offset in the front and 16" wheels. I wanted to move up to 17" wheels so I researched the archives and instructions on doing so. (Thank you to all who have shared their knowledge on Rennlist).

I found 1" spacers from a 944 for the front. The instructions indicated that the front spacers needed to be drilled out to allow clearance for the wheel bearing cap. So I did BUT maybe too much??

I'm attaching the pictures to show before and after.

My major concern is, if I use the drilled out spacer, would the rim be secure? I'm assuming the rim would only be held my the wheel studs. I intend to participate in DE and at possibly 150mph (in my dreams), what would happen?

Well I definately would not recommend using those spacers now. I am running spacers on my '86 944 with 18" wheels. I got the H&R studded adapter style spacers. The hubcentric ring keeps the wheel perfectly center on the hub and takes some of the load off the studs. What you should have done is machine it enough on the inside to fit the cap, but you ended up maching the entire way thru and removed the centric ring in the process.

Thank you, both, for your reply. I guess I got grinder happy and grinded the hubcentric ring off.

I'll have to find another way of getting my 17" wheels on. Oh well, back to the drawing board.

Just get another set of spacers, they're cheap used (about $20-40/ea). Grind the inside of that centering ring only. And at an angle to match the hub underneath. Only need a 30-degree bevel for about 1/4" anyway.

If I remember correctly spacers for frontaxle are either not recommended or not allowed.
I am astonished 18" wheels on 86 951 - as far as I know Porsche does forbid 18" rims on Porsche cars that don't have 18" originally.
I personally have 17" rims with wrong offset 13 mm (8,5 x17 225/45/17) on my 86 951 and do not like the shimmy effect I have along with them.

I have an 86' with 993 wheels on it and Danno's instructions would not work on mine, my hubs must be a little different. I had to bore the adapters and carefully grind the last little bit for a near press fit. I was able to save the center but not by much, a year later working fine, Bill.

I also have 993 wheel, but they're aftermarket and milled with the correct offset. They're heavy, but not too bad. They look great and I don't have any problems with spacers.

Forget E-Bay, there are tons of those spacers available. Call Oklahoma Foreign and they will sell you a set. I paid $25 each for mine about a year ago. As for spacers at a DE, I'd suggest keeping your stock phone dials and running those with some nice sticky rubber. Keep 'em just as a track set. You can pick up open ended steel lugs from Paragon that will allow you to swap between the two sets of wheels. That way you get the best of both worlds.

Thanks for suggesting another option. You have a point there about putting sticker rubber on the 16". I'll have to decide on the pros and cons. I was hoping to put 17" with sticky tires.

You do have the choice of wider rubber in 17 & 18" sizes. Widest for 16" is a 245/45-16 with some Kumho tires in 265/45-16.

With 17", you can use 17x10/11" with 255/40-17 and 275/40-17 tires.
On 18" rims, a 18x10/11" combo with 255/35-18 and 285/30-18 tires would be even better because you won't be jacking the back end up.
