a lot of time "structural oil pans" means that the trans bolts to the oil pan as well as the engine block to make the assembly more rigid.
A rock strike is certainly a concern, so perhaps installation of a metal shield would work to prevent such damage, and/or use a more impact resistant composite like Spectra or Kevlar. Making the pan itself would be pretty simple using moldless composite technique such as sculpted foam as a mandrel, and using the old pan as a template for the gasket.

Or, can the stock oil pan of this Audi engine be modified such that the engine is adaptable to slant mounting, avoiding the problems of the crossmember, etc?

V2Rocket has a good point... I didn't think of the fact that the VW transmission bolts to the pan as well as the engine block. That is probably why it is such a stout aluminum piece. The Quick Time bellhousing will also bolt to those locations on the pan. I will add that to my list of things to keep in mind for the new pan design.

I really think a fabricated aluminum pan is going to make more sense than a molded composite. Structural portions of it will need to be CNC machined billet, and non-structural portions can be sheet metal.

Thank you so much for all the efforts to carry this forward. I hadn't checked the thread in a year or so and it was amazing to return to so much progress.

Quick question - does it look like there'll be room for an A/C compressor with the 07k?

As long as you have the accessory bracket it shouldn't be a problem. The only issue would be running the lines for the system to the new location of the compressor, and making sure the fittings are all correct. Other than that I think there will be plenty of room.

Great, thank you very much.

I don't think A/C is going to fit where VW had it mounted on the 07K. I'm planning to use the Iroz Motorsport 1.8t power steering pump mount in that space. I believe the VW A/C compressor might stick into the 944 steering rack, but I have not looked at it in detail yet.

Thanks Alan - is it fair to say there's probably enough room to get something working though, even if it means custom bracketry and a completely different compressor?

I’d probably just use an electric compressor. I’ve used the ones from Tecumseh “Masterflux” on EV projects before and they work well. They have a 12V model that could work if you get a heavy duty alternator.

Alan, was wondering if you had any spots left for the group buy on the bellhousing?

There are a couple guys who are pending that would fill the total of 10. However, there is no real reason that I could not expand the group buy to 11. Please pm or email me if you are interested. alan_arkus@yahoo.com.

So much progress since I last checked in! Well done gents!

If only these engines were available in Europe... However, if Alan will crate the engine with everything included for the swap!

One more thing: would a supercharger fit on the driver's side?

I'd be willing to crate up a kit for you, no problem. Once I have a kit, that is... :-)

I don't know if a supercharger would fit. I can look into that once I get the engine in place in my car next time. Do you have a particular type/make/model of supercharger in mind? I assume you mean a centrifugal one, like a Vortech or Procharger?

No, I was thinking more along the lines of a Whipple 140ax. I'd use an air-water tubular cooler and add two radiators like where the 951 oil cooler just on both sides. Intake air piping will also be problematic, I know.

Nope. :-)

Sorry, I guess that was a little rude... I really doubt that a twin screw supercharger will fit the space in the engine bay and under the hood. If you're willing to have a pretty big bulge in the hood, I think something could be done. I know there is room for a drive pulley up top (similar to where the Beetle 07K engine mounts the power steering pump).
