Yeah, and so does the tar from smoking, it never leaves your system as well. There have been a huge amount of people been "infected" with asbestos in the Netherlands. Most people don't even notice that they have ever been infected. If you are working with asbestos and you inhale the particles and on does get incapsuled by your lungs, you'll have a chance to get sick, but even then it's only a chance and it's not certain!

One exposure for say 15 minutes is enough to develop Mesothelioma years, and usually decades later. No cure for Meso, just a certain, very painful death. Asbestos was still in the marketplace up until the early 1990's. We are seeing secondary exposure cases now; that is children and other members of a household who were again exposed decades ago when someone exposed in the workplace would bring it home on their clothes. Bad stuff.

So back to the topic on hand as we already know asbestos kills.

Any other parts on the 944/951 contain asbestos? The hood liner that crumbles? Interior? Other heatshielding?

How are you guys handling the manifolds?

If I understand correctly, these are 951 headers with heatshields :

... and these are 951 headers without heatshields :

Is that correct?

If yes then I believe heatshielded headers were for US cars only, as I have never seen them on any ROW 951. In fact, I have never seen heatshielded 951 headers elsewhere than on pictures posted on here.

I have a car with the heat shields. As snora said, they are empty. Just air. Where exactly would the insulation be?

Very interesting, what years do you guys have snora and TheHummel?

I have set that have some packing between the heatshields and tubes and other members here found some black beads when taking off the shields.

Hmmm... my headers and x-over had some sort of insulation underneath the shields. It looked like fiberglas matting of some sort.

This was on an 88 correct? It sounds like you had some of the asbestos insulation.

A good friend of mine owns an asbestos removal company. I also have asbestos shingles on my house. My friend told me that I would be stupid to remove it because it is the best insulator availabe. "As long as its not broken into a light particle form by cutting or blasting there is nothing to wory about" is his answer to the asbestos question. Yes it could be very dangerous if handled incorectly, and was banned in 1981 for use as pipe insullation in homes. I am sure Porsche was aware of this and decided accordingly. Bottom line is, it works well, just dont saw through it. And if you really want to remove it, wear a full head cover with a mask.

Yes, an 88.

I figured it was the same sort of stuff that is on the backing of the aluminum shielding in the engine bay (or is it sandwiched between, I can't remember?).

Appears Porsche experimented with several different insulation types. Probably trying to do several things including protecting the fuel lines and removing heat from the headers without having them crack.
