fuel vapor purge system removal? anyone?
 

951 guru's please help, I am just wondering how many people have deleted their fuel vapor purge system and what is the best way to get this done? I imagine remove all the components, delete all the vacuum sources and then route and put a filter on the fuel vapor return (line to top of the tank)?

I don't know if I qualify as a guru but I deleted mine. No issues so far (nearly 20k miles). I removed everything from under the hood and then cut the soft line between the tank and that hard line under the car and put a cheap-0 in-line fuel filter in the end that goes to the tank... I figured that would help to keep water out of the tank. That said, If I had it to do over again, I would probably have just capped the hard line on the firewall and either used an early 944 fuel cap (vented) or drilled a small hole in my fuel cap to vent. Only reason I would have done this instead is because it seems to work just as well, and it's easier to reverse, should I ever need to replace the system.

I deleted mine 3 or 4 days ago, capped it off and drilled my gas cap. Sounds like you have the gist of it.

Charcoal tank was a little heavier than I thought it'd be.

where did you drill on the cap?how many holes and what size?

If you do this^^^^^ you will have fuel seep out during left hand turns. The tank needs to be vented properly. I just ran a thin black hose from the hard line in the engine compartment out the original gromit on the drivers side into the fender well. No fuel smell and a properly vented tank.

Yes seriously. People have been drilling holes in their gas caps to resolve these problems for decades. I haven't noticed any problems with fuel seepage, I don't think I've ever seen my gas lid even get wet from it but then again my tank is rarely full:roflmao:

Worst case scenario I seal up the tiny hole and route the line off the gas tank somewhere.

That must explain why people behind me spin and crash while I'm making left turns!

I drilled a smaller hole than that in my track car and it still let out a lot of fuel in left hand turns. Blow $8 on a vented cap.

I searched for a part # for an OEM vented cap but came up dry. The hole is working fine for me so far, but I'd pick up a replacement if I could find something other than Stant at the local auto parts store.
