How much lag can you deal with?

Just a bit of fun, How much turbo lag can you deal with on your 951?

all at 1bar / 14.5 psi.

9turbo51 10-16-2012 08:33 AM

My car is a dedicated track car so not really driven under 3500 rpm.

reno808 10-16-2012 09:48 AM

I am always racing so the RPM's are always at 6500

lee101315 10-16-2012 10:42 AM

I think it depends on the power output youre looking for.

I'd say full boost at 4000-4300 rpm is acceptable if you're making 450-500hp, but totally unacceptable to make 300hp.

Fluidplay 10-16-2012 10:57 AM

Don't mind a little lag, as long as it pulls hard to redline

dnovak 10-16-2012 11:01 AM

No Lag and big HP. That is what I like :)

+1

with a 8k rpm limit i think 4 is ok

95ONE 10-16-2012 03:18 PM

I voted based on 25psi. :)

blown 944 10-16-2012 04:27 PM

With a 2.5 sub 3500. Stroked engine sub 4k

Lighter bottom end, dry sump & solid lifters? Geez a lot of rpm

dont really need solid lifter for 8k rpm but will probably use solid liftes. i will probably only go to around 7800

toddk911 10-16-2012 09:55 PM

On 2.5 and leaking headers I had 1 bar at 3600 and now 2.8 is about 3200. As the weather cools I expect sub 3000 for 1 bar.

Reimu 10-16-2012 10:04 PM

my 60-1 hits one bar at around 4100

Little laggier than I'd like, at least I get decent gas mileage...

piperporsche180944 10-17-2012 12:15 AM

4000 with all of my builds

Hope you're making some big power with that lag, or it's pretty useless IMO

In a 4th gear roll on??

Sounds like you have some boost leaks.

So then you guys better start working on installing some big block V-8s!

toddk911 10-17-2012 10:14 PM

To this day I have no idea what lag is. If you have lag you are in the wrong gear.

If you have 1 bar at 3500 then you should be at 3500 when you nail the throttle. Pretty simple.

If you are in 5th gear at 50 mph and expect to pull hard then you should get a mini van. Because in a performance situation you have no business driving at 2500 rpm.

This has always been my position as well. It's kind of nice when the car has a Jekyll and Hyde type performance, it's like having a nice tame commuter car and a stupid fast rocket ship all in one vehicle. Plus I love the feeling when the car transitions into boost and you slowly get sucked back in the seat. That said, being able to pull from 1800rpm in the C5 on the highway is kind of nice, but if I'm in the mood for fun I drop it into 2nd gear, which redlines up around 80mph.

Reimu 10-18-2012 12:07 AM

You mean permanent lag

lee101315 10-18-2012 07:20 PM

I like my turbos on the laggy side and specifically, I love the old K27/8 turbos characteristics. I love it when its nothing, nothing, nothing, and 3500rpm comes around and it goes BOOM, wheel spin and all. And again, if you're on the highway, drop it to 3rd and go!

I have a Boxster with a 911 engine that has an instant response coming out of slow corners, but its still boring compared to the 951 on the highway.

I tried to edit it but i can't.

I've smoked so many V8's its not even funny but I haven't had the pleasure yet of smoking a V8 swapped 944. Its only a matter of time. ;)
