How much is to much play in a turbo
I just got a Turbo s Turbo from ebay.
The guy claimed he replaced the bearings recently and that the turbo was from a 69000 mile car. The shaft has very little end to end (cant even register the movement visually) play but probably just shy of 1/2mm of side to side play What do you guys think, is this thing going to blow smoke, I paid $200 for it, should I send it back or will it make a good set of parts for my future hybrid. I want a turbo that will run at late 300's whp eventually, I just got this one because I found a decent amount of oil in my boost pipes, the car doesn't smoke but I would guess it soon will Any advice on my next move is appreciated thanks Kim |
That is probably ok. I'm no expert, though.
However, the turbo on my XR moves verrrrry slightly and it's just fine. |
For $200? That's about/less than what a core is worth, you did fine.

since there is not oil in the turbo, it will have a bit more play than normal.

Turbo is fine, since it's a journal bearing turbo you will have some shaft wiggle this is necessary for oil to get in between the bearings. If the blades can touch the sides and scrape and/or there's side to side play pushing the shaft inward then it needs the rebuild.

I guess I don't know I just went off the sellers word, it's a used one!
Anyway what do I need to give you guys to verify the model Thanks Kim |
Inside of the turbine housing on the inlet there should be either an 8 or a 6 stamped in it.

try clarks garage for turbo identification:

Just checked it, it says 6.
I will contact the seller in the morning and keep looking for a turbo Thanks guys Kim |
I knew it that represents the true side of mike damiza

Turbos spin above 100k rpm.....take it to the turbo guy to have it measured up.
"Just a little" or opinions on a web forum are no substitute for accurate measurement. |

I got a turbo S turbo that was listed as a k29 or something stupid. No shaft play at all but it was passing oil so always get it rebuilt while you have it out. shaft play is not the end all be all for these turbos. Still got a great deal 225 shipped.
