Default 86 951 Power Steering Rack Rebuild Questions

I purchased the reseal kit from Pelican Parts, and followed these directions...

http://www.rennbay.com/psrsealkitfull.html

Before putting everything back together, I have a couple questions.

#1 - I have 1 large o-ring and two small o-rings left over...is this normal?

#2 - Below is a pic of a plastic ring I broke removing the wiper seal in the rack housing. The kit did not come with a new one, and I can't locate one online. Is this a necessary piece I should replace? If so, anyone know where I can buy one?

Two small o rings go on the little plastic elbows on the outside of the rack. Not fluid bearing so not really needed. The other one is included on some late (968) racks. If you didn't remove one like it, yours doesn't have it. Not needed.
If you can push that plastic sleeve back in as is and if it will stay in place, do that. If not, no big deal.

Pretty cool of Travis, jumping in to help even when the parts were bought from another vendor!

Ahhh...makes sense for the two small o-rings, didn't even think about the two black elbows. I think I'll just leave them alone.

Since the lip that holds the plastic sleeve in place broke off, I don't think it will stay put. I guess I'll take my chances and not re-install it.

Thanks for the advice!

Most of these parts can be bought as BMW parts. Check out E30 & E36 rack seal kits. Which are available for a good price. Same thing with PS pump. E30 seals are a direct fit.

bad info

The pump is the same inside as the e30, rack is completely different. We do supply the bmw rack kits as well if anyone needs one.

With E30 & E36 seal combo you can rebuild also 944 racks. Have done that.
Years ago ZF fabricated rebuild kit for 944's. I still have one of these kits. ZF part number is 7840 633 004, in case you can still find them in the USA.
Edit: did fast Google search. Original seals are available in Germany for 50,93€

We keep the BMW kits in stock so I took a quick pic of the E30 & E36 for you and then circled in red the parts in each kit that will cross over to the 944 rack.

If you accomplished a rebuild in the past by sourcing and compiling seals from various BMW models, they must have been for RHD specific applications. For LHD, only that one shaft seal is the same size, none of the others are even close.

Had old seals with me. Went to local BMW and parts guy picked up new seals for me. He told me they are from E30 and E36 racks.
Since ZF rebuild kit 7840 633 004 seems to be available, no need to use BMW parts. Or do you think this ZF kit does not do the job.
