Default is the aor trans worth it over the other lsd ones?

Is the AOR trans worth the extra $500 compared to the other 5R(LSD and Cooler) or 9U(LSD, no cooler)? I just want to be able to have both wheels spin and take some abuse at 300whp.
thanks

What's special about the AOR? I guess this whole time I thought the AOR was the one with LSD + cooler.

All of the non AOR turbo transmissions could be had with or without the oil cooler and with or without the LSD. You need to look at the code to determine what the trans is.

The deal with the AOR transmissions is that they have a hardened 1st & 2nd gear and a tighter LSD.

The reason they hardened the 1st & 2nd gears is that they are not as strong as the other gears because they have fewer teeth. And the part that was hardened was the pinion as 1st & 2nd gears are actually part of the pinion shaft. Fewer teeth means more load on each tooth.

For everything except a powerful track car, you'll never realize the benefit from an AOR over a regular LSD turbo trans.

This raises a question, how much abuse can the LSD trannys take? I have a 5R and was wondering, as I had a LSD in an N/A and that blew with little abuse.

I have seen people drifting turbos, if I tried to do that with my N/A it prob would have blown the LSD in a matter of seconds!

944 NA transmissions are weak, its no surprise you blew one up.

I have seen a few 951 transmissions with worn/missing/chipped teeth on the ring gear. So they aren't exempt from failing either, although they are much stronger than an NA

Here is a quick list of what will destroy it.

Clutch drops

If you Use your imagination, there are a lot of variations dropping the clutch in an 'enthusiastic' manner ( between shifts, drag racing, to drift, etc ). Stay away from those, and you'll break yours. Also, Stickier tires aggravate the situation.

The AOR tranny comes only with the 88-89 Turbo S was indeed hardened to cope with the added torque of the turbo S. This is what happened to my 5R tranny when I had 355rwhp & 352RWTQ

That's 2nd gear. And it's part of the shaft. I've done the same thing.

What I learned is to never use 2nd gear on the race track. There's not enough teeth (same for 1st... but nobody uses first on the race track)...

Problem solved.

Yeah, but that's just not practical on some tracks. Laguna has two turns that you need to drive off from in second.

I could see heavy track use in a very powerful/torquey car causing that as in Tony's case.

But, dropping the clutch is the usual cause of such carnage. I have seen on several transmissions driven by bone stock engines, Turbo and NA. These transmissions are actually very strong when used properly, but abuse or lots and lots of torque will cause this.

Then gear the trans accordingly so that you don't have to use 2nd gear.

No matter... if you make a lot of power on sticky tires and you use 2nd gear..... it will break.

I have many times. BUT... I always shift soft and smooth.. Somewhat Quickly. But smoothly. My Second will hold if you roll on it. But that is just my trans, and I will NOT drive harsh on anyone else car for fear of breaking like stated above.

wow it sounds fragile.
So what are the V8 swap guys doing to keep the trans whole?

You can't roll on it on the race track. You roll it on, and they put a couple of car lengths on you coming out of the corner.

315 sticky tires with 400ft tq at the wheels, will rip off all the teeth on 2nd gear eventually. I got a couple of nice input shaft paper weights to prove it. :-)

Now I just don't use 2nd gear on the race track. Besides... even though it feels otherwise.... the car car is actually faster not having to shift.
