Default Hello Gentlemen (951 caliper seal kit ? and timing)

Hey,

Still refirbing my 951. Things are going well for the most part.... one problem is I cannot find a reliable seal kit for the stock calipers (front or rear). I have seen several videos pointing to stoptech but they apparently stopped carrying them. Since I've already ordered one bad set (for a N/A 944 even tho the model was turbo) I was wondering if you currently know of anyone that sells these?

One more question about the automatic tensioner. I have heard that you just let it do its business and then check to make sure it is correct via the arnnworx tool or whatever you have. I am just about to put this back on the car (can you even get the belt off with it on the car???) after a roller arrives. I have read that once you get everything set up then give it a 10 degree turn to the crank to properly apply the tension. Correct? I do use the seach function, this is just for my own sanity regarding timing.

Call Karl at Racer's Edge. He is an authorized StopTech dealer, and probably has several kits laying around.

Most here would cringe if I admitted what I do with the tension on the belts.

I did. All I had to do was drive my car until the belt failed and it came right out!

Just judge the tension by feel.

yup. I tried that stupid twist measuring tool, and now I just gauge it by feel. if it feels tight enough, it probably is.

The way to check without a gauge is to twist the belt in the middle of the long run. Cam is 45 degrees, balance is 90 degrees. I set it with the tension tool and check it with the twist...it gets you in the ballpark.

Oh well if you have done many and know what you're doing then id say that's normal. I wouldn't cringe. My friend that's been working on these cars basically since they came out does that.

Not to start a long thread, but I thought it was 90 on the TB and 180 on the BS.

Paragon sells the Brembo seal kits... and yes they are stupid expensive for the 951 calipers compared to 996 calipers... like 3x the cost!

And I'm with 67King on the whole belts thing... have done this on my own and many other cars... and have yet to have a single issue!

My only advice: Don't screw up the old scrapers until you get the new ones. The seals weren't my issue, it was the damned scrapers. You can buy a 951 with a bad head cheaper than redoing all the seals/scrapers in an 86...

Since I am retired, I have plenty of time to do research and read all the daily posts as it has become a hobby of mine. This is what I understand about StopTech, They do infact sell the seals, but you do not tell them they are for a Porsche. Measure the 86 Brembo caliper pistons in mm and just order those sizes that fit.

http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j...j6uGBIYMXAvE5g

Front:
36mm piston: 951.351.919.01
38mm piston: 951.351.919.00
Rear:
30mm and 28mm

Cheers,
Larry

Which calipers do you have? I researched it endlessly a while back and finally concluded the only place to get the complete kit was the dealer. They were way over-priced, but the only place to get everything. The piston diamters are all over the map, even within model years, and the pistons for my calipers were nowhere to be found outside the dealer.
