Weekly update for those who read this crap.

Decided to go up on a tuesday race car test night instead of my normal weds event (have company tomorrow).

I'm certainly glad I did, bc I had a couple of issues pop up. I really wanted to make it up to get the car sorted before this coming Sunday, as there is a tuner race on Sunday that I want to participate in.

So toninght...

First pass I try to use the two step to get used to it ( thew whole point of going up tonight). Car launches well but snaps an axle shaft once it hits boos tin first. Did get a 1.8 sec 60' tho.

Second pass- car gets off good and then once it just gets into boost in third, the IC coupler pops off the TB. First time this happened with the 928 TB. Looking at it I should have known better to machine some kind of groove in it. I will tomorrow. Car runs a 12.3 @98 mph shutting off at half track. It went 100 in the eighth, so would have been a pretty good run.

Third pass- break the other cv cage on the outer joint... ugh. lol

Fourth pass- runs pretty good considering I basically idled it off the line and went 11.67 @124+

Fifth pass- snap the vanagon spare shaft.... These things suck. I don't even know if theyre good for one good run honestly!!

Decided to call it since I only had one more spare vanagon with me.

Although it ended up being a PIA night. I got a couple things to fix that are easy and not on a real race day

Engine ran flawless and I even cranked the boost back up to 17 on the way home to see what the voltage was. It's looking promising @ 4.8 volts. My 125 mph runs are at 4.3-4.4. So a bit more power.

So tomorrow, I will be machining the 928 tb and using a thin clamp I think.

Also ordering a couple more vanagon shafts and replacing the joints on the 951 shafts I have. I will inspect the shafts and upload some pics. Looks like I really need to get some stronger axles in here and then figure out the trans too. I will probably go ahead and install the audi inner joints, since I'll be rebuilding all my axles anyway.

I think what happened tonight is bc I was using the goodyear drag radials and they really hook, along with teh track being very well prepped.

Also i set a new record for how fast I can change an axle and be back at the starting line. Took 12 minutes total from teh time I got back to my pit to when I ran the next pass. If nothing else, that went well

Have you considered having the joints chemically hardened?

Tonight's festivities include. 11.58 @ 127.5 right off the road!!

Next couple passed I told them I'd try to not go any faster so I came off idle and went a couple high 11's at 128.

Now I put the slicks on to see if I can get my short track a little quicker and maybe I'll do a full run by the end of the night.

It's running good. I'm at 17 psi right now. MAF voltage isn't maxed since I'm at higher elevation.

Not sure what I'm expecting, just hope not to break!!

if you can run 128 up in space where you live, at sea level your 951 should be capable of time travel

Well, it was interesting overall. Didn't really best anything other than I've now backed up my 128 a couple times.

I will say that this engine is flippin strong. I had put the slicks on and did a burnout and I must have been too far into the water bc it must have only spun one tire in the box. So what happened is that the other tire just smoked horribly. It redlined first and second a few times. I looked at the tach a couple times and it was just buried!!! then shifted into third going way too slow and had the only crappy run of the night.

One thing I THINK I got squared away is that I did not break a cv and I launched it hard a lot of times. The only difference is that I drilled the end of the shaft and machined some delrin buttons to keep the shaft from sliding too far outward. The idea is to keep the cage centered in the races in a loaded condition. It must have helped as I made about 5 runs that I just hammered it off the line and they held up. This is only my first iteration of stronger axles. So far so good!!

I did get some better launch times (60' times) but i had to let off as they were warning me.

So in the end I ran a few 11.5x times getting off it at 1000 ft., so not bad. I do need a bar in it before I go any further.

It was an enjoyable night. I made 12 passes all in the range of 11.51-12.00 and the traps were all over 127 (when I ran it all the way through)

On the passes that I just ran to 1000 ft I did pick up my1/8th MPH from 99-100.5 (these would run out to 127-128) to 101.5-102 in the 1/8 mile. So with all that. I should be able to run 130 on a full pass now.

It was a good learning experience overall.

That's some great consistency Sid. Now that 128mph is your baseline where before it was your best.
How much of a cage do you need to go to the next level...what sort of weight?

Not much Pat. Just a 5 point bar and harness and steel valve stems should tech me to 10.0.

If I go cromo tubing it'll only add around 60 lbs I think.

really need to get it done. Tonight I'm pretty sure it would have backed up my best ET.

I still have some other things in the works regarding the drivetrain that I may sort out before installing the bar. I don't know.

I do know that I have a lot of room for improvement on the launch. If I can get it down to consistent 1.6's it'll be a solid 10 second car. That's my goal for now and why I went ahead and decided to forego the top MPH tonight in lew of working on the launch. I should have pushed it harder.

My plan the next time up is to just go for it on my second pass. I'm gonna set the two step to 5000rpms and run it up to 15psi and let her fly. If it breaks, it breaks. After launching it hard a few times tonight, I have a lot more faith in the axles than I did.

Nice!

What is the plan to deal with MAF voltage Sid?

Thanks.

I'm probably going to pull the axles tgus weekend to inspect whats going on. I'll take some pics and share them. Ill also be installing them into my spares too. So I'll take done pics of the whole process. It's pretty easy.
I'm looking forward to seeing what your car can do as well.

Shawn, at this point, I'm just gonna leave the boost down. I'm maxed on my injectors and more than likely my pump too.

Probably not going to get too much more carried away with it for awhile. I'm thinking that I can hit the tens at 17-18 psi and probably 130 (I think I would have hit that last night)

Thinking I'll leave it alone for awhile and enjoy it along with doing some cosmetic work.
