The Stupid Things We Do

So last year I was an idiot and dropped a 10mm socket in the inspection hole. That was an adventure. :nono:

This week I needed to change the clutch on my wife's new 86 NA. This is my first time doing a clutch with the engine in. Everything was going fine until I got to the torque tube. Clarks Garage - Pull back, Turn 180 degrees. Torque tube got stuck, wrestled with it for about a hour. Called Josh B asked him about it, he said he has never had any problem pulling the torque tube back. Wrestled with it some more, CRANKED on it and finally got it back.

So... today I get in the cabin to grab a CD and find the Shifter/Knob sucked in and all twisted . Luckily the leather boot and knob were undamaged but I can not say the same for the rubber boot.

So...I guess I am still an idiot :)

It's only ~$30 from the dealer. Not an expensive lesson.

nah...you get points for trying something difficult. I do a lot of my own work and I usually find if I had paid myself about $10 and hour it would have been much cheaper to have someone else do it. But there is a sense of pride when you turn the key, the car fires up, and you roll down the road after you did the work yourself. It's the journey, not the destination, that counts.

Wow, you must be damn strong to do that! Impressive determination. Really, who among us hasn't done something at least that absent minded...

After doing the clutch with the engine in, you'll feel like the most competent mechanic in the world.

I've done this before, you're not alone. Once you're under the car it's very easy to forget the shifter...

About 15 years ago I changed the hoses to the power steering tank as they were leaking. I installed the tank too high on another 951 and slammed the hood shut. The tank hit the hood, and made a dent that actually broke the paint on my perfectly painted hood........I thought I was going to puke.

I did that with my 928 throttle body -- who knew you had to cut part of it off to clear the 951 hood.... :)
