Seeking advice - Potential purchase of 944 Turbo S
#16
If the engine is already in good working condition and if body panels are straight then a GT3071R + full custom SS 3" exhaust + aftermarket ECU make the car desirable enough to me even if it needs a new paint.
Running such a turbo at only 10 psi sounds odd to me though. Could be hiding a tuning issue somewhere?

Re the paint, a lot of red cars just oxidise and a good cut and polish will fix that pretty easily. Unless the paint is physically damaged it can usually be rejuvenated. That is certainly my experience with guards red.
As lots have noted the 944 power steer is not very light compared to other modern cars. On the plus side, it has possibly the most perfect weighting and feel of any power steer car I have driven once you are moving.

driving the 951 today, it's not light to turn with 1 hand but it's not hard to turn corners with 1 hand.
IMO i agree, that it's pretty near perfect with the weight, you need to feel the road when driving.

Yes I think this one definately needs a respray and a cut and polish wouldn't cut it (no pun intended).
Ok I got some further details from the current owner's mechanic today. No dyno sheets were available though.
The car was tuned for reliability and response rather than outright power. Low boost is 9psi and 12psi high making 271rwhp. The 3071 is running the smaller trim for response.
Clutch is a standard Porsche replacement Sachs clutch. I was surprised the stock ones were so heavy (the only other 944 Turbo I've driven was an 86 and that was some time ago). The mechanic said the replacement standard clutch could hold 350hp.
He also didn't seem too phased on only installing Bosch 40lb injectors. When I queried the turbos ability to take significantly more boost he stated the 12psi was set for reliability given they're aging cars which is fair enough. He also said a 255L/hr fuel pump was used but he couldn't recall if it was Bosch or Walbro (I suspect the latter).
I also got a quote today for a factory red respray around $4k which seems reasonable. This respray would be the whole car minus engine bay.

that makes a lot of sense!
it does sound well sorted also. that thing should make full boost by something around 2500rpm? sooner even.
any pictures of the car you would like to share?

Quick update. Made an offer to the owner but he's quite firm on his price. Unfortunately I'm not prepared to pay $20k for the car when it requires a $5k respray on top. He has a quality car there but I'll keep looking for something more to my liking.
Paulyy - Yes I do believe it was making good boost by 2500. On my short test drive it was quite sluggish at 2000 (as most turbo cars are) but dropping it down a gear so it was sitting at 2500 and you could feel it was ready to go. I'm curious how the GT3071 small trim would compare to your GTX3076R. Have you got dyno sheets showing response with the M-Tune?
Also, do you know anything about the below Melbourne car that's been for sale for at least 6 months? Looks like a good baseline to add an exhaust, M-Tune and GT3071 or similar...

no dyno sheets just yet. put it this way i get full boost (17psi) at 3600 rpm i (should) have a lot more top end then a gt3071r. i've also got a .82 a/r housing.
that's a nice looking car, but to put a m-tune ($1200), full exhaust (600-1000), gt3071r+bits ($1800+) better wastegate ($500)
think about it. 5 grand on car parts or 5 grand on a paint job.
It's also done just about 300,000 km which means rebuild time. = more $$$$

Yes despite the high chassis km's the black 86 Turbo has had virtually everything rebuilt. It has been sitting for a long time though. I would've thought someone would have snapped it up with an offer of a few grand less.

The market for the 944 isn't that big here. if someone wanted a cheap 2 door sports car it's a nissan skyline, toyota supra and stuff like that. not many people know the 944 exists.
