Post K27/8 & Other Upgrades-Update/Lengthy

I recently asked the board for help in selecting a Turbo for my 951. My original config was as follows:

'87 951
K27/8 hybrid
Cyntex chips

The past two months I've had quite a bit of work done to my car including: new water pump, radiator, engine seals, alternator, belts, shocks, rotors, wires, motor mounts, and many other items, to many to list here.

While the work was being done I decided to upgrade the following:

Tial 46mm wastegate
cat bypass
Autothority MAF & chips

During the process it was determined that the Turbo was shot. I asked the board for input. I went with the Garrett K27/8(not an earth shattering choice).

Although there are a few small items left to be done at the shop, I couldn't wait any longer and stopped by yesterday to see how things were coming along.

My Tech asked if I'd like to go for a "test drive."

The results are nothing short of AMAZING

Was I uneducated about these cars

These cars are wicked fast when properly tuned modified and driven by someone with considerable track time.

For the less knowledgeable Porshephiles like myself, here is a word of advice: If you don't have experience driving one of these cars to its potential, let someone who does know, take you for a drive in your 951...it is imperative!

This is what I looked like in the passenger seat:

<img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" />

I didn't know how much these cars could deliver....sure I'd heard about it....and mine was fast before....but I didn't know what I didn't know <img border="0" alt="[grrrrrrr]" title="" src="graemlins/cussing.gif" />

Frankly, I'll be surprised if I ever need more power (or be able to drive it to its potential).

Unbelievable that many of you are running 951's which are faster....

Thanks for your help and suggestions! <img border="0" alt="[burnout]" title="" src="graemlins/burnout.gif" />

Congratulations! Sounds like a monster! I bet you are dying for Spring to come so you can really take it out. Maybe I will see you prowling around beating up Corvettes and such...LOL.

Peace.

2+2 Funny you should mention Corvettes. My tech's shop is located right next to a large Corvette shop. One of the tech's at my shop has told the people at the Corvette shop....

"Any time you want to compete, let me know....we work on the Porsche 944 Turbo here."

They have yet to take him up on his challenge. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

That's what I like about this shop...he has Pride in what he works on!

I just can't wait until I can stuff a big turbo and all the other stuff under my hood and go for a drive!

They did the work on my current car for the P.O.,John H., who bought a 993 tt. I've been impressed with the quality of their work, at least from what I've found on my car. They were really helpful the night I drove to Washington to get the car, I had a bitch of a time loading it onto the u-haul trailer and they stayed late on New Years Eve to help me. Where did you get the turbo? I want to replace mine with something that breathes a little better that a K27/6.

Minh bought the Turbo from Powerhaus. I'd Minh if you have any questions. Even if he's to far for the work. He has spent a lot of time with me over the phone. Excellent customer service. I'm certain he would talk to you. I have no connection with Pitstop other than as a customer.

I've driven the same configuration with a K28/8.
It was a little to sluggish on the low end for me..with a 2.5. Powerfull when it kicked in, but felt it left to much on the table before I had to shift. I think it would be great with a larger engine..as on the S.

I also think John at SFR seems to have a good product. Don't know about his warranty, and I don't know how it will compare with what you have.

The major concern Minh had with any Turbo supplier was the warranty. If he put one in and it blew...he wanted to be certain the supplier provided a warranty.

Minh also talked me out of a K27/6. If you are ever in the area, feel free to email me and I would be happy to let you drive this one.

Hope that answers your question.

Modena 1-

"What is the Turbo Lag like"

Sorry for the delay getting back to you.
This was a concern when I purchased the Turbo.
I had quite a few people say that I would have a lot of lag.

All I can tell you is that I'm very pleased with the responsiveness. I can be going five mph, press the accelerator down, and my wheels spin right up, very little lag, and significant punch. I don't typically drive like that, but I wanted to see how the new set-up would accelerate from a low speed start.

I guess it depends on what you are used to. To me the lag is a non-issue with this set-up. I never want to give up the punch of the Turbo...so that dictates some lag.
