'86 944 Turbo synchros and transmission
 

Hi,

I have an '86 Turbo with 62k miles on it. It's my second car (the first one fell victim a month after I got my license to an SUV and a cell phone at a stop sign) and I've learned all the finesses of driving a manual on it. Unfortunately, in the process, I had a bad habit of putting the clutch in and pushing the shifter into first long before I came to a stop (like 35 mph before I came to a stop).

Now that I know better, there's quite a bit of effort to slide it into first unless you double clutch, and occasionally you can feel the gears (not grinding, just feeling the teeth come together a bit prematurely) as it goes into first. What is involved in replacing the synchros/whatever has to be done to restore the shifting to what it used to be?

I've looked up the price and a rebuilt transmission appears to run upwards of $1500 (ack). After rebuilding the upper end of the engine, a new exhaust manifold and a new clutch I don't feel like making my mechanic any richer than he already is, but I am willing to do what is necessary to get it back into shape.

I can relate, 5 weeks after I bought my first 951, it was totaled due to an inattentive driver. (not me).

I can't help much on the tranny, but post a message to the 944 list, there is a tranny guy that will give you the straight scoop.

I believe that any gear or syncro work will involve a complete teardown of the trans.

Have you looked at used? I was going to sell my used one for $800, had no takers, so you should be able to get one for less than that.

Checked your tranny oil level lately?
No oil = bad shift

Transmission should last longer than 62K mls
