Will 993 rims fit on 951?
 

Greetings all,

I have the opportunity to purchase a beautiful set of 993 Cup Wheels (Front 7.5x17 and Rear 9x17). Will these bolt on to my 86 951 without extra curricular activities (spacers, rolled fenders, etc.)?

I saw an article in Excellence (944 suspension upgrades), where a guy put a set on a black 944S and I loved the look. The article did not say if any modifications were required to fit these rims.

I would greatly appriciate any comments to help in my decision.

you will need spacers, I have a set of 993 Cup rims on my car now and they fit without problem. But the 1986 cars have a different offset and require either spacers or a complete conversion to the later suspension.

What year is your car and what did you have to do to install these rims? I have a set of 1/4" spacers from Automotion, do you think 1/4" is enough? I believe that if more than 1/4" spacing is needed, the wheel studs would be too short.

Anyone know where to find the offset information on 951 phone dials and 993 cup rims?

The wheel offsets are stamped right on the wheel. As for putting post-'86 (late-offset 52.3mm) wheels on your '86 car (23.3mm early-offset) here's a parts list:

FRONT WHEELS
#911.331.671.00 (10) ten 65mm wheel bolts (stock is 45mm) ~ $5/ea
#477.501.701 (2) two 21mm wheel spacer (came stock on rear of '82-85 944NA) ~$15/ea

REAR WHEEL
#901.331.671.01 (10) ten 72mm wheel bolts (stock is 45mm) ~ $5/ea
#930.331.611.04 (2) two 28mm wheel spacer (used on rear of 911-turbo) ~20/ea

OPEN-ENDED LUG-NUTS $20 total

The whole set-up should cost you about $150. When you want to put your stock wheels on, just remove the spacer and use the open-ended lug-nuts.

The route you describe (what I affectionately call "Big Basin Speedway) is one of my favorites in this area. I drive it during the week when it is wide open. On weekends it becomes a zoo, cluttered with crotch rocket motorcycles, blue hairs in their convertibles and SMOKIES. I have even seen the CHP bring in helicopters with black & whites en-mass on holidays or when the bikes start getting out of control.

Well, I pretty much ran around all day Friday getting all my paperwork filed and inspected by the "right" people to get my car out. Ran to the DMV, had my insurance company fax over my policy statements to them (because all my real paperwork was in the car at the impound yard). Then it was over to the CHP so they could look at my paid registration (their paychecks depend on it, ya know). Then they had to call the towing-yard to let them know that my papers were in order and that I would be by to get the car. Finally made it there by about 4pm. What a wasted day riding around in cabs. I had left at 5am to drive down there and I got home around 8pm. At least I got to slice and dice through L.A. traffic for practice.

Anyway, let's DEFINITELY plan a Pizza Run on Sat. 27 Nov. 9:00am. Meeting in the same place as last year, the 76 station at the corner of Saratoga Ave. & Saratoga-Sunnyvale! See y'all there!

The parts list you gave was spot on, Thanks.

Just got back from the local Porsche parts counter and the costs were as follows:

20 - 72mm Wheel Bolts $193.20
2 - 21mm Wheel Spacers $114.60
2 - 28mm Wheel Spacers $230.00

These prices included a PCA discount. I hope I wasn't taken to the cleaners.

Can the old bolts be hammered out and the new ones pulled in with the nuts, or will a hydrolic press be required?

Damn, that's pricey. I should've recommended some used parts places or dismantleres.

Procedure is pretty simple.

FRONT:

REAR (can't remove hub because of one-piece pressed-in bearing).

I just made a set of spacers for a fellow PCA member. They were for a 951 and I think he was mounting a set of Boxster wheels on his 951. The shims are .125 thick hot rolled steel and are laser cut. Anybody else interested, let me know.

Oh, I forgot to mention that you have to grind a 1/4" bevel on the inside of the front spacer to clear the hub-bearing cone. If you've got a metal bit on a die-grinder, it shouldn't take more than 5-minutes. Avoid the stone grinders because the aluminum will just melt and clog the stone.
