944 Turbo S - A/C Question
 

Guys,

I have a quick question -

Are the revs meant to rise when I turn on the A/C?

I know this happens in other cars, but does it still happen in the 944 Turbo S.

Reason I ask is this, my Aircon is not as cold as it should be. I've had it regassed, the Climate control knob is ok, and I think the switch is ok too..

So do the revs rise when the aircon button is pushed or not :-)

Yes.. the rev's should rise (or more importantly... shouldn't really drop).

I've got my compressor disconnected (okay, the clutch doesn't work.. but I've got a replacement!), and when I click the A/C button on the dash, the revs rise a bit (to compensate for the additional load, I guess), and I hear all the under-dash motors wirring.

I figure if the compressor was working, the 'rise' in revs would pretty much match the increased drag. Mind you, with an older compressor, the drag may exceed the addition revs, so your rpm may drop a bit, but it shouldn't be too bad...

This must be another weak link in these cars as when my compressor cycles on my rpm go down 200 rpm. There are devices designed to make the revs change as little as possible and I asked my Porsche dealer if they thought I had a problem as it made the motor idel too low at times. They set the idel revs at 1200 and said everything was ok. Now it goes from 1200 to 1000 revs and when I find the time or someone who knows how to adjust the idel I am going to try 1050 w/o the compressor. This should give me 850 with the compressor. Any lower and the motor will shake a little-motor mounts are good.

When I push the button my revs don't rise, but nor do they fall. Would this mean that Air Conditioning compressor had failed?

Is there something that controls the revs rising and falling?

Well if cold air blows out the vents everything works fine...
I can't comment otherwise as my AC is currently busted. :)

Shouldn't the idle be 950 +/- 50 at all times?

When I start the car (cold) and turn the headlamps on, the car fluctuates at idle around 950 +/-50 rpm's causing the engine to shake as the rpm's dip. This goes away as the engine warms up. This is most evident when the engine is cold and has not reached operating temp. Anybody ever experience this? How did you solve it?

How are your motor mounts?

I need to replace mine and it is most evident when the engine is cold.

So getting back to the original A/C question... ;)

When I hit my A/C button, the revs don't change (maybe they go down about 50rpm) and the air coming out is nowhere near the ice coldness I used to know..

I think I'm just going to bite the bullet and take it to an A/C specialist here in Melbourne to get it fixed...
