3ldz 930 turb0?

My employer used to own an 88 930. He had upgraded the turbo as well as variuos other stuff. The turbo removed was a 3ldz kkk which I understand is basically a k27. The turbo and cams just sit on a shelf at the shop and Im sure I could have this turbo for very little if anything. If in fact this turbo is a k27 and applicable to my 86 951 I would definatly take advantage and pick her up. Does anyone have info on this specific model? Help me out guys! With luck I can save a ton of dough here.
Thanks

dont the 911 and 944's use different exhaust flanges? When was the k27 introduced on the 3.3? (86?) did they use an 8 or 6 hot side on the 930 k27's?
sorry to add more questions, but I am thinking about looking into a 930 in the future. :)

No. The 3ldz is not a k27. It's basically a k26 with different exhaust flange. Also it's not water cooled like your k-26 in you 944 turbo. The 3ldz turbo are worth very little. Everyone who has a 930 usually upgrades to the more modern and efficent k27-7200 turbos. Save your money and but a Garrett.

ken,

which do you perfer, the 951 or the 79'? I am actively looking for an 78-79 or grey market 930. <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

Well Luke, I currently prefer my 951 right now. The 951 I use as a daily driver. The 951 seem to be easy car to drive. the 930 has some serious turbo lag (nothing that b&b headers, k-27 7200 turbo can't fix) but I tell you, when I drive the 930 it get so many looks. If you are serious about purchasing one I suggest to take it for a test drive to see if you like it. How your car coming along?

Luke,
How could you possibly afford a 930? Don't you start college next fall? Nice 930's run about 25-35k.

I have driven one, but it was kinda nasty. I wouldn't look for a nice one. I would probably buy and build a 3.3 turbo motor long before I bought the car(early 3.3 car).

Luke that how I purchased my 930. It need engine work so I took over payment (15K). When I purchased it, it needed new head studs because some were broken, compression was very good 150-160. The estimate that I was quoted to repair it was around 4k. The car still ran really strong even with these problems, so I figure no big deal.

When my mechanic tore into the motor, my 4k estimate became closer to 9K. Beside broken head studs they found a couple of broken rings. In order for me to do it RIGHT I had to replace quite a few item. For what I had spent, I probably could have found a really nice one. So my advice would be to spend the extra money and get a nice one.

86 turbo,
Ken is right, that turbo isn't anything special and wont fit on your car anyway.

Luke, I'm not sure but I don't think they started using the K27 until the '91 C2 Turbo. The 951 is much cheaper to hot rod than the 930, but, nothing is cooler than the 930. It has been the car synonomous with Porsche street muscle for 25 years now, when you think Lambo you think Countach, when you think Ferrari, its the Testerossa. When you think Porsche you think big flares, whale tale, 930!
Just own them both and there is no problem

Those are my exact thoughts in writing! I wouldn't be able to afford the car for probably 3 or 4 years but in the mean time I would really enjoy "BUILDING" a 3.3turbo motor myself!!! There would be no pressure to rush. There is just something about the sound of that motor!?!

:) I would'nt even want a BEAST like Ph.D's. Just a finely tuned machine. ;)

So true Mike, When people look at my 930 they know that it's a PORSCHE. But the 951 are SO Under rated, I feel in time they will get the respect that they deserve.

Im not willing to wait that long. (j/k) I actually enjoy driving the much slower 911sc's than my 951. even with the sloppier 915's, it's more like riding in a go kart. I just love them.
