Post Recomendations for rotos and pads?

I'm looking for some advice for a good rotor and pad setup, and also the best place to order them in the US. I was thinking of some frozen rotors and Hawk pads. I'm not sure which Hawks yet. They will be mostly for street driving and DEs now and again.

Also, do you think that using street compound everyday (ie. Hawk streets), but then chang to track compound (ie. Hawk blues) for the DEs is better than using one set of pads for everything??

Thanks for the advice

You might try Paul Weston at Weston Motorsports, phone 888-558-0631. I just bought some Hawk Blue track pads from him (get to try them out at Summit Point on Friday ) He can also fix you up with rotors, including cryo if you want to spend the $$$.

Street pads aren't particularly good on the track, and track pads aren't particularly good on the street, so yes I'd say it makes sense to swap them out.

I don't know if there is anything to it but I think I have better luck when I buy rotors from a Porsche dealership and at 125.ea. they cost enough to justify gryo expense. Even though I'm a fan of slotting I'n not sure it's worth the extra price but my next fronts will be slotted. Hawks are good as long as the dust will not mix with water like rain or your washing your car. If this happens you will be sorry and looking at maybe $500. to remove the wielded on metel layers of resdue on the inside of your wheels. You can also get a coke or pepsi looking stain on your paint that will not be removed easily. I recommend a carbon/kevlar type of pad. Last time I looked AJ-USA had them at a very good price. The pagid's are the best (clever germans)but high bucks. Stay away from the ceramics as for each quater inch of pad you use you will the same amount of rotor. Changing your rear brake bias valve in order to get more rear brake power is the biggest bang for yor buck.

Definitely use the pagid pads for the track, they are a little more $ but they're easier on the rotors than the other pads I've tried, and they don't fade at all (orange compound, I think they're the rs-4)If you have a 1989 turbo you already have the better brake bias valve, it was one of the improvements of the s cars (I have one too).

I had Mintex red box on my car w/Zimmerman OE rotors. It had good all round stopping power but not enough for continued DE runs, Fade city. I switched this weekend to the Carbotech Panther pad, NOT the panther plus, w/Zimmerman rotors. I have only put 30 miles on them so far.........holy $#!t....After following the break in guide lines I ran her 100-0 4 times in a row not one ounce of fade, can't wait till they are fully broken in. I have used hawk blues on my VW track car w/11 brakes....These pads are nice once they are heated up.....not to good cold. The Carbotech have all most instant grab. I could lock all four up at 100 MPH plus....not that you would...but you could. If you are a PCA member 10% off. www.carbotecheng.com
I got the Rotors cheap at 18774GERMAN. I also get all my VW OE parts and Porsche parts here. Mark and Dave are true VW/Porsche nuts. Best service around.

hi,
I have an S also, I have been 4 times to the track and have been very pleased with my current setup:
Stock rotors, Hawk HPS (street) front and Hawk HP plus (street/track) rear and SS lines. I have had plenty of brakes for the track I have been to which isn't that hard on brakes. I would probably get HP plus to match the front if I need a little more aggressive setup, maybe add cool brake ducts. Either way, they have been a good compromise without fade on track or street. Best of all, the pads have worn very well and I probably have another 3 or 4 trips left. Dust is not bad either. I would reccommend getting them from www.vertexauto.com They sell all the types of hawk pads and have great cust. service, get the sport susp. option ones, they'll fit.

I'm looking for rotors too, and bias valve is first on my list- someone in this thread mentioned that the Turbo s had the better bias valve- that's news to me. There was a thread on the main board recently about that. I've been planning a 5/33 bias valve for months, and the replies on the other thread all agreed that that the stock turbo bias valve is a 5/18 whether on a Turbo or Turbo S. At any rate, I'm ordering the 5/33 very soon, and there are two others that are more agressive, that wouldn't be wise for a street car unless specific mods had been done, but the 5/33 should be fine- especially if you have ABS...

Anybody use drilled rotors? I'm a fan of slotted rotors, but I don't see any reasonably priced for my 86 turbo. I just got on the computer to order some Hawk blue pads for track/street use, along with rotors 'cast' with the holes from vertex. Just thought I'd check w/you guys.

Thumbs up

Whatever you do, also get a cool brake kit as well or you'll toast your rotors eventually. Another option for pads is Performance Friction, which are pretty tough on rotors but are les likelt to fade providing you've got a cool brake kit. The only complaints I've heard are that they get too grippy when they get hot and are tough to modulate without locking up.
