How to drag race your 951...is it a drag car? :-)
So I just finished another fun night up at the track. There is only one more week left before they close for the season.
I got to thinking why not let everyone know how I'm doing it. So far I have 57 passes on it in the last couple of months. That is more than I ever put on my drag car in a full season!!! I have not been easy on it either. I have ran 15 twelve second passes, 17 sub 2.0 sixty foots, and 5 sub 1.8 sixty foots and even three 1.7s along with one 1.61 sixty foot. All of this is on a clutch that just doesn't like big power.
My best et and speed is 12.4 at 118 and my next is 12.67 at 115.
Tonight I ran only a 12.7 at 113 . The DSM BOV broke as soon as I hit the high boost button :-(.
So IMO these cars are perfectly fine for drag racing.
Onto how it's being done and why I feel it is staying together.
1) using a trans brace, as long as it keeps the trans from moving from side to side it should be fine.
2) using a two step to get the turbo spooled and to hit the tires hard. I set mine at 4500 rpm and try to modulate the throttle to leave at between 10 and 15 psi
3) I don't go through the water box. I just go around it. A little tirespin seems to work pretty well. However, lately I've been bouncing off the rev limiter in first then it grabs and runs out first.
4) I use flat foot shifting to a degree (I'm not completely proficient at it). It keeps the turbo spooled and keeps the rpms up as well.
So after fifty plus runs in a short period of time I am very happy with drag racing this car. I DD this thing and it has not let me down once!!! Yes it's a gamble, but after this many runs I'm fairly confident it'll get me home.
Thanks to Bruce and Josh for the knowledge. I'm looking forward to next year or even going to Vegas once this winter.
Hopefully there is some info to help out some of you guys that have more HP than I do that like to drag race so we can start making some noise with these things.

They are stock axles. Ordered from Pelican IIRC.
Just to be clear the clutch isn't slipping off the line using the two step at all. It only slips in higher gears. Now if I try to come out off the clutch w/o the two step it will slip immediately. I've tried numerous times to see how it would do with the same result. The two step gets it up on the tires right away. It is the only way I have been able to race this car so much. W/O the two step my ET's would be just like my old red car (all over the place).
I know this sounds contradictory to popular belief, but it is what is happenning.

Sid, you make it sound like I actually gave you a bunch of advice. You clearly knew what to do. The trans brace was about all WE all came up with. I give lots of credit for that to TMS also. VERY happy we solved it though. I'm damn sure that's the issue now, NOT the axles. Great job. Do you have the Limited Slip Trans? I'm sorry, I think you said yes, but I'm at work at don't want to spend time searching.

The tires are cheap kuhmo 275mn.
Bruce, no it's an open differential. I was just thanking the ones who I got some info from that helped. So thanks to TMS too :-). Otherwise this is just cobbled hoopty of my creation.

It is a two step rev limiter. An MSD 6al2. It allows you to set a second lower rpm limit using the clutch switch. I believe Josh has incorporated this into his software now too. I like using the MSD box because I can easily change the rpm.
What it does is allow the turbo to be spooled on takeoff so there is no lag.

Very nice! I did quite a few runs in my 2.5L with a slipping clutch and I did about 10 in the 2.8L. I have only broke 1 CV this year. 951's arent so bad in the 1/4 if you know how to drive them, we are living proof!
