Exclamation URGENT: timing/balance belt adjust procedures

Hey everyone!
Please help me settle a discussion...

87 944 turbo...on the timing belt...do you TRUST the auto tensioner, or do you use the gauge to double check?

A shop here in town says you can't get the gauge on the timing belt w/the auto tensioner in place...I think they're bull ******* me!

Please respond quickly...it's in their shop!

Everything I've read says you set with the $500 guage and the tensioner is more just another part that can fail.

Use the guage. The tensioner sets the initial tension but it still can be off spec by a large margin.
Porsche themselves stated that the 9201 guage should still be used for cars with the auto tensioner. Good enough for me.

I replaced my tensioner when I did the rebuild. I did use it alone to set tension, then checked with the tool. It was too tight by a hair.

I have done enough by feel to be close enough. They stretch out anyway. The retension should be checked with the tool since that one is more critical.

If you are unsure, always use the tool.

I just got off the phone with the mechanic. He said that the first couple of times they do a car, they double check to see if the auto tensioner is accurate. If accurate, they continue to just use the auto tensioner. I asked them to please always double-check with the gauge, and they said they would to make me happy.

So, I'm happy...I guess.

Thanks for the help all...
