Rebuild/Swap No Start Situation- Now solved
Alright, so I got my motor in and everything hooked up.
For the record this is a Turbo S motor going into a 87 n/a chassis
Tried doing the usual oil pump prime up, pouring oil in the filter housing and turning counter clockwise, no sparkplugs or dme, try cranking the motor for a few seconds at a time. When I turn over I see the pressure gauge bump a bit, sometimes as high as 1.5 bar, but nothing relieving. Oil pump is still dry too...
So I read that some people risk it and just start the engine for a few seconds to see if it'll build pressure with load. So I put the plugs, dme, etc in and turn over.. Nothing different happens. I have 4 fresh gallons of gas in the tank and my gas gauge still reads empty, and my mechanical fuel pressure gauge on the fuel rail is picking up no pressure. I know it's possible that some crud could have stuck on the filter, but that wouldn't result in seeing absolutely no pressure would it? I hear a whirring from the rear when I turn the key.
Furthermore, my tach doesn't move during starting
thanks to anyone who can help me get this thing to move
****To those of you who dug this up using search, several things were wrong
-chip was in backwards
-dme needed a solder refresh
-ref/speed sensors were good, but needed to be adjusted
Turned out to be a lot of causes for the same effects

DON'T crank the engine anymore! Pour some oil in through the oil filter (remove the filter and pour it down the hole) and turn the engine backward by hand. Then disconnect the dme and turn the engine over like you're trying to crank it until it builds pressure. Mine did it in about 10-20 seconds.
The tach should bounce. If it doesn't, check your speed and reference sensors.

There's a thread about a LR trick somewhere... Apply 5-10 psi compressed air to the dipstick tube while cranking with the coil wire disconnected. That should prime the motor in about 5 seconds.

Even compressed air in the dipstick didn't work for me. It finally took removing the oil filter to remove absolutely any restriction and cranking the car without plugs or injectors installed/connected. Did it until I saw oil start to pump out (didn't make that much of a mess) and after that it was just fine.

Yeah I'm going to try and get a hold of an air compressor tomorrow, only one I have on me is a small portable one that goes in a cigarette lighter. Just for ****s and giggles I tried pumping a small hand pump through the dipstick tube and bubbles would pop up in the oil on the filter port
In the meantime I'd like to figure out these other problems. After digging around a bit I have some connectors unaccounted for under the passenger side dash:
and these two females

A small update, my speed and reference sensors tested ok on resistance (I have them mixed up though..)
And my DME relay is dead, they sell these at napa or something?
I jumped the fusebox and got fuel pressure
Now, does the DME relay do anything related to rpm signal?

Nordschleife Master
DME relay doesn't affect the RPM gauge, however having the speed and reff sensors connected to the wrong plug will cause both NO RPM reading, and DME relay to not enegize.. (needs to see 300 RPM IIRC before turning on fuel pump)..
now that you have the sensors connected correctly, did you try starting it again?

I can get regular fuel pressure to the injectors, but my fuel gauge still doesn't read anything. Then again, does it require the motor to be running to show the level?
Turns out I don't know anyone with a regular air compressor, but when I give it a go with my little hand pump it doesn't take much to see the oil in the center and top hole of the filter housing to move about. It looks kind of like oil bubbling up from the ground.
Does nobody know what those passenger floorboard connectors are? I don't see any rpm jump with the speed/references in either configuration.
Guys I have to have this car out of the garage in under 9 days one way or the other, I'd really be happier if it was under it's own power.

Yes
Hell I tested the reisistance from the dme plug to the connector and marked which is which so I wouldn't have to deal with it anymore.
Tach doesn't bounce at all when I try cranking, and boy do I hate cranking it without oil circulation...
The idiot lights all show up
Can someone give me a sure thing on if the tach bounces or oil pressure showing with the dme removed?

Tell you what
Anyone who can help me out here can have a good used turbo head, but it has a small chip in the ceramic. Good base for a grind I guess. Sure it's not a super sought after piece but hey it's free after you pay shipping. Also have an n/a head with twisted up valves if you'd rather have that or want to place it on your coffee table for some cool automotive modern art.
