How much ($$$) of a problem is this to fix?

The stock power steering was removed on this car. So I went under the car to take a look at what pieces were missing. That's when I saw the cracked cover and the missing bolt. Should I be totally panicking at this point?

P.S. Sorry for the large image

You don't want to be responsible for what this car could do to yourself, your family, and your neighborhood. I have a trained team of professionals that can come out to your house to remove the car so that the danger is gone.

Please send me a PM with your contact information. I'll contact you via phone and send details on transferring the $1,000 to my account. Once the money hits my account, the car will be removed from your premises within 24 hours.

Whatever you do, do not touch the car!

Steve,

Now thats my kind of humor. Its nice to see others with a slightly twisted sense. Oh it was too easy though! Must be those cold artic winters, and the effect it has on the Gray Matter.

Seriously, I wouldn't worry about a cracked cover. They are easy to crack, and I don't see why it would be a huge deal. You might try to find a new one, but they're pretty cheap, and easy enough to fix.

Fixing the power steering is another story, of course, but just a cracked cover doesn't matter much. Hell, you could take it off, superglue it, and put it back with a screw from the hardware store.

Nice to see that people on this board have a sense of humor...I was just too caught up in this to realize the date. I should have guessed though, my seven-year old tried all day to stick a fish drawing on my back.

I just replaced one of my cracked covers. I got it from Vertex for $56. The upper one had a smaller crack which I fixed with superglue. It's really not a big deal unless the crack is letting alot of gunk into the timing belt area. Any garbage in there could shorten the life of the timing/balence belts.

You can just remove the cover, and smear epoxy all over it to seal the hole until you have enoufh extra cash to buy a new one. I have a small hole in the bottom of mine, where the Alt. Belt cut it's way into the casing. I didn't bother to replace or repair the hole, as it makes a handy drainage hole if fluids get into the casing!!! (There's something I think is missing from the original casing!)

Was the steering rack filled with fluid? Is it leaking or was it drained?

If the belt was removed, and the system is full of fluid, you are okay, no need to panick.

If the fluid is gone, you may need to either replace, or rebuild the power steering rack. There are springs and seals that tend to crack if the steering is applied without fluid or grease in the system. Ask Travis (sflraver)... he knows a lot about it. www.rennbay.com

I don't know if the rack still has fluid.
How do I check?
