Here's the Question:
Can I swap spindles from an 86 to a later version and not change the "offset"?
I want to replace the spindles on my 86 951 race car with the stronger 87 or later.
I have big reds w/ adapters and charley arms. I have three sets of CCW wheels.
What I want to do is just swap out the spindles ... can I?
If not what is required to accomplish the swap? <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

I have been told yes, I have yet to see it, but I am intersted in the same thing.

As it was explained to me, you can mount them, but you are going to have to use camber plates to get them alighned because of a slight difference, more than worth it to me if I can get 87-89 spindles on my car....

Swap the spindles and hubs and the offset will not change. You won't be able to get much more than a degree of camber out of the setup, though. Camber plates would address that nicely.

I have 87 spindles on my 86 with the short arms, Big Reds and Racer's Edge camber plates.

Sounds like I can use later spindles on my 86 951 without much of an issue. (I have camber plates as well)
My main concern was not having to replace my 3 sets of CCW Wheels.
ADDITIONAL QUESTION:
Are "S" spindles different than Non-S (87-88) spindles?
With the "S" spindles would I need the billet adapters I'm currently using on my 86 spindles or would the big reds bolt right up?

From what I gather the TurboS spindles would not need the adapters. Since the TurboS came with the same front calipers as the S4, and they are a radial bolt pattern. If the spindles are set up already for a radial-bolted caliper, then there would be no need for the adapter. I'd like to hear for sure from a TurboS owner, though.

Just to confirm that the later hubs and spindles will fit an '86 951. I did it, with S4's and Koklen adapters, but I can only get about one degree of negative camber. With the shorter a-arm, the late spindle sits closer to vertical than it does with the longer (late) a-arms, which is why you can't get the full range of camber adjustment. I drive my car to and from the track, so one degree is ok for now, but camber plates would fix that. In fact, I may do it this winter. I'm going for a full Racer's Edge LEDA-plus- Hypercoils set-up, so the camber plates may become part of it.

Is it not possible to just swap in the later type A'arms as well to get the required camber?

You can use the later a-arms and maintain the full range of camber adjustment, but then you have to use later wheels, i.e. 55mm offset instead of 23mm. The longer a-arms require wheels with greater offset to maintain geometry and clearances.

Just to add another variable. On my car, an 86 with 87 hubs spindles, I can use late offfset wheels with 1/2" spacers. Of course I have the Charlton Heston chariot look alike wheel studs.

A couple questions:
1) What are your front camber settings? Do you happen to know what your maximum negative camber is with the 87 spindles and the camber plates?

2) Regarding running later model offset wheels. What dampers/spring size (circum.) are you using? and how much clearance do you have inner and outer (both front and rear)?

My car is at the WheelSource in Dayton at the moment. I'm having the new Moton Club Sports installed along with a Kokeln rear suspension setup. I'll post photos when I get it back the first part of next week. At the same time I'll be able to give you some measurements.

As far as spring size goes I use 2.25" springs front and rear. You could use 2.5 up front but there isn't enough room on my 86 for 2.5's on the rear. At least not with the Moton setup. Moton supplys an adapter/extension to get the spring perch up and away from the banana arm. I had the first set in the country for an 86 so they learned from my problems But they were very nice to me for my inconvience.
