Post I drove a Boxster "S" last night...

My friend just got a 2000 Boxster "S". he came over last night and we swapped cars for a while. On paper a 951 and a Boxster S have about the same 0-60 figures. However, in everyday driving these are certainly different beasts. My friend's first comment after driving my car was how much more "viril" the 951 was compared to the Boxster.

The power delivery on the Boxster is quite even. Compared to a 951 where nothing really happens until the boost comes on and then...Wow!

The Boxster's 6th speed seems to be useless to me unless at cruising speeds on the highway when one wants to maximize fuel economy. Also the shift point between 2nd and third is a little bit awkward...When you release the clutch, it's hard to feel the tranny engage.

Still the Boxster 'S' is a really nice car. The handling is Porsche suberb. That car screams the need for a turbo. That would really transform it.

I've also driven the Boxster S. It's quite a bit more nimble than my 951S and ride quality on bumpy roads is much better. The engine sound is also very nice and makes the 951 sound coarse. Overall the suspension on the Boxster is noticeably softer than the stock Turbo S suspension. On the other hand, there is no comparison in power. My car, with the GURU MAP setup, is much, much more powerful once the boost kicks in. As you say, the power delivery on the Boxster S is quite linear, without the punch you get from a Turbo.

Indeed the Boxster could easily be a daily driver...in warmer climates. Certainly not here in Montreal.

The ride is much smoother that the 951.

Any other 951 owners out there who also own a Boxster?

I tried 986S last summer. It had the "sport package" and aero kit with sport exhaust.
The sound and handling was just awesome.
Of course it missed the boost, but to track driving and DE 986S with sport suspension is just great !

Yeah but only 290 horsepower out of twin turbos! That seams a little low.

I'm one of the fortunate few to own two Porsches - an 86 944 turbo and an 01 Boxster S. They are very different animals indeed. Power delivery on the Boxster is very smooth and there's quite a bit more torque at lower RPMS (it makes 80 percent around 2K rpms). The Boxster handles great, exhaust note is awesome, and you gotta love a drop-top Porsche. The Boxster is a much better "around town" and weekend trip car IMHO. BUT - the Boxster does not give me the same rush that the turbo does when the boost comes on. And it's much easier/cheaper to get extra power on the turbo. With the S you can supercharge, do an ECU, header, swapout, turbo, or transplant a 3.6 engine but the cheapest option there is around 5K for maybe 30 to 40 hp. What will 5K on your turbo get you? There are several kits that will get you 100+ extra ponies for 5K.

So, I leave the Boxster as Porsche made it and spend my mod $$ on the turbo - much better bang for the buck. They are very different cars made for different purposes and I really like them both a lot. I've seen several discussions comparing different Porsche models to the 944 turbos - it's really just proof of how good these cars were (and still are).

LOL - yeah the Boxster is a TWO person car. Actually when you fold the rear seat down the turbo actually holds more stuff!

390 horsepower from a Boxster S [3.4 liter] with stock compression is nuts.
