Proud new 951 owner
Hello all,
I'm sure you've all seen a thread like this before. Except i've done some research allready
Just wanted to say "HI" and let you all know I am now proud to own a 1987 Porshce 944 Turbo (951). The car is graphite black (don't know stock color name) with tan leather interior. I bought it with 105K miles driven by a 70yr old lady for the past 12yrs. The interior on this car is immaculate! Just like any car 16yrs old it has it's downfalls. Like paint seperating on the hood, few lil dings and some small scratches on the rear quarters. I don't think the moonroof works, but then again I havn't had time to play with it much since i just got it yesterday. Oh yea, the biggest downfall is the cooper cobras!! What the heck are those doing on my porsche!
One last thing, I've seen that chips seem to be the best bang for the buck. The real question is which brand? I've looked into the guru ones and have heard alot about authority. Can anyone shed some light on this subject briefly?

I think you'll find that the general consensus here is that the Guru chips are the best around. Danno is an active poster here and it's truly amazing what that guy knows about these cars.

Thanks guys. I can't wait to drive this thing. I test drove it and it was awsome.
I don't plan on doing to many mods to it, just the chips, K&N and diffrent BOV.
About what rmp does the turbo start to spool. I know i really had to get on it to get it to spool.

Hey WesM951, welcome to Rennlist.
On your chip decision, I will give you my first hand experience. My 951 came with Autothority Stg2 chips which are generally said to run too rich in the mid-rpm range and then lean out up top. Some other Rennlisters have posted dyno's with these chip and they have a terrible air/fuel curve. I took the car to Watkins Glen last year for a track event and a week later I diagnosed a burnt headgasket. Now the car only had 51k on the odometer and the engine was bone stock besides the chips. I had to spent a lot of money to get the top end rebuilt.
I have since switched to Guru Racing chips and the difference is night and day. The car runs smoother, feels a lot stronger and pulls harder, and gets better gas mileage than the Autothority chips.
Some others run Autothority chips and have no problems, but that was my experience with them. Another bonus with the Guru chips is they not only come with a better boost enhancer than the Autothority jetted banjo bolt , but also come with wastegate shims. All this for a CHEAPER price!!!

Welcome to the family - be prepared to spend all your extra cash on your new baby...it's a wonderfully addicting habit.
I'd echo the Guru chips (no affiliation) - I have the Stage I kit on my car and it really improved driveability, response, and power compared to the Autothority Stage II chips. Is the turbo still stock? If it's taking a while to build boost you should check the BOV and replace it if bad (just did this and it solved a slow boost build problem I was having) and install an aftermarket boost gauge. The stock gauges have a reputation for getting old and inaccurate - an aftermarket one will give you a much better idea of what's going on with your boost . And start looking for split lines, leaks, etc... in your vacuum hoses. As old as these cars are rubber tends to dry out and split - especially if you start running higher boost levels.

Thanks again guys. The car is completely stock to my knowledge. Everything looks to be original. Well except the norm spark plug wires etc.
I think I'm gonna go with the guru chips. The cost and opinions is what I'm looking for, and so far they seem to be the best.

About the BOV, 993TT is good, but the Saab 9000T part is better; both are Bosch part, look identical and do bolt right on.
You can tell the difference from the part number, the Saab ends on # 110.
It is a bit tighter than the 993TT.
I got it, and I'm very happy about it.

I went looking for the 993TT part, but the only one I could find in town was the SAAB part (they're both Bosch and very similar). I have a serious problem with instant gratification when it comes to that car so I spent a little more to get that part from the SAAB dealer then if I ordered it off the web. If you just getting started with your mods and aren't really planning to run high boost levels (over 15 PSI) I'd say order something like the SAAB BOV off the web. If you know now for a fact that you're going to mod your car like crazy and run high boost pressures then go ahead and get an aftermarket one.
There's a couple of threads on testing your BOV - basically just disconnect it and blow into one of the large tubes. If any air comes out the top it's bad.
Here's the part numbers for the SAAB BOV I'm using.
BOSCH # 0-280-142-110
SAAB# 4441895

Thanks Dwayne! It looks like either $42 for a saab BOV or $185 for a HKS SSQV BOV. The only thing is the saab one is a direct fit and I don't have a clue how to mount the HKS.

the saab idea is a great one for the money...altough i have a lindsey unit i hear very good things about both the 993tt and the saab.Did the car come with any history?? I would change all the belts and fluid's before driving the car hard.These are great cars and everyone he is like one big family...goodluck with your car............and <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" />
