The fact that my friends call it a VW, or a Poor Man's Porsche. The latter is sort of true, I'm a poor man now after owning this Porsche. The power mods aren't terribly expensive (compared to 911 parts) but the speed is addictive, and I can't stop adding crap...

I was referring to the 17" wheels - factory are pricey, replicas suck (ask me how I know)
BTW the hatch IS a bad design. Any fool knows to secure the hinge mechanism THROUGH the glass (the heavy part) and not to rely on a 3/8" glue bond to survive through the years...
Non-serviceable ball joints are bad design as well.
However, I'm happy I don't have a BMW. My buddy has an E30 M3, remember those? - BMW's
real racecar-sold-to-the-public? He can't adjust ANYTHING on his suspension except front toe. No camber, no caster, no nothing.
As crude as the 951 is, at least you adjust it!! And ALL the brakes that came on these cars were great. Great, Greater, and Watch The Windshield!
Oh - add the ridiculous-Caddillac-soft-squishy stock springrate, especially in the rear (951S owners have nO idea what I'm talking about here)

I dislike that I am not driving my 951 right now, it is sitting under a tarp in charlotte waiting for me to solve the boost problems (new waste gate).
I hate the sun roof and the hatch rattling.
But come on, how else could I have a car that will run with e46 M3's at the track with just suspension work.
Luke and Rage, I can't stop adding stuff either
Leda Adjustable Shocks (full coil overs)
HyperCoil Springs (much stiffer than stock)
M030 Sway bar in front
3pt adjustable bar in the back
Racing Dynamis Sway Bar
Autopower Roll Bar
Factory 17 Inch C2 Turbo rims w/ R compounds
Factory 17 Inch 993 Cup rims w/ Kuhmo 712's
Sparco Pro 2000's
No back seat
Autothority Stage II chips
3 inch cat back
hawk HPS pads
up next
adjustbale boost controler
dual port waste gate
big reds

I hate the fact that all repair shops assume that I make 6 figures and can afford $3K in repairs and maintenance. Maybe I'm just poor? (paid $4500 for my 87).
Also I love calling suspension and alignment shops... "How much do you charge for 4 wheel alignments?" "Well, it depends on the car, btw we don't do porsches".

Perry, you can bend wheels pretty darn easy if you are up at 17" and 40 or below aspect ratio rubber. I have old BBS RSes and managed to avoid bending for many years until a pot hole jumped out one spring. Even top quality wheels can't take a deep pothole, much less curb.

Well I must first state that I have owned may vehicles (currently have 9 in the stable)and so-far the 951 is my favorite.
So now with the negative.....
Fuel Vapors in the cabin (NA & Turbo both had this problem).
Lack of room for upgraded stereo speakers.
The fact that my car spent time in the snow belt (did someone say previous owners) and every exterior bolt is welded solid.
Leaks! balance shaft covers, rear main seal, oil heat exchanger cover, power steering hoses, fuel lines (check your recall notice).
Insurance premium due to the word "Turbo". I have had my NA for 16 years, no accidents, no tickets (that they know about anyway, I have a PHD in traffic school)and the premium is reasonable. When I added the 951, I just gave them the vin # and they said "OH a TURBO" thats more. I pointed out that all they will cover is the blue book value which is very low, they said "But it is a TURBO".
Did I say fuel vapor in cabin? (someday you all will know why I said this twice).

Speaking of expensive most of my experience was garnered owning Porsche's most expensive car...928 S4 and GTS. My 89 was over $80K new and the GTS was over $90K new. At least you can modify the 951's to acceptable performance levels without breaking the bank. If you have to rebuild the 5.0 or god forbid the 5.4 you are looking at over $5K for the 5.0 and over $6K for the 5.4. With a 928 it is either a Super Charger or Stroker kit and that is basically it...
That's one of the reasons I'm buying my 951.

I love the 928 and was actually looking for a decent 928 when I found and drove a 951 for fun...Next thing I knew it was mine
...and by the way Ross...Did you get any closer to finding one...I see Minh dropped his price to $10K.
What I don't like ( and this applies to all Porsches) is the price of parts the dealers charge...Ridiculous...When I need a good laugh I call them for comparison...
$65 for a dist. cap
$65 for a rotor
$435 for a rebuilt water pump (plus $151 core)
Granted these are Cdn prices but c'mon...$65 for a rotor...I laughed at the guy...He didn't think it was funny.
Also why no tilt wheel...and the stupid digital clock (of course mine dosen't work)...That's it...I must say the list for good things is endless.

Hey Mike.. next time you need a cap and rotor, I'll buy it for you and ship it. You can make up my cost, far far less than yours.
Why is it that people in Canada pay so friggin much for stuff??

Mike B,
No I haven't bought yet. Minh's car is a good deal for the right person. I don't want to spend a premium price and then have to add a turbo timer or retrofit the turbo plumbing. For a daily driver I think that is what I'd have to do.
I'm going for the 87 that is $5K. The engine was rebuilt about 10K ago and upgraded with a Powerhaus turbo. It needs a new wheel(bent Twist replica), A-arm, rear hatch adjust, sunroof adjust etc...
Unfortunately it is going to cost about $1,150 for covered shipping. But even with that cost it still appears to be the best deal.
Roughly $4500 less than Minh's.
