Default Quieting intake "whoosh"?

Reconfigured my intake to use a MAF / cone filter setup. I am now somewhat missing the nice, quiet factory intake.

Was wondering if anyone has found a way to put a bit of a 'noise damper' on the intake whoosh associated with the turbo and the diverter valve?

Thinking of some sort of 'sound box' that directs cool airflow in from the bottom while containing the general sounds....??

No real hits in the archives....

Putting the filter in the wheel well might quiet it and give you a cold air source. NZ951 did a box for a MAF filter a while back, and lindsey used to sell a version of that -- but they were done more for the cold air. You might check with NZ to see if that box also quieted the intake.

Check this thread out. The noise issue starts being talked about on post 363 and goes on for awhile. He got black flagged for noise.

Hmm. Interesting. Might be able to build on this idea...

I would think an 'egg crate' type surround might be more effective than dynamat.

Any other ideas?

couldn't resist. That sound and the sound of my custom 3" exhaust are my two favorite sounds! Why would anyone, but a Mercedes Boat driver want to destroyu that? SACRILEGE!

Funny guy.... Yeah, I know. Let's just say I like a (little) stealth. That great sucking noise followed by the dump of the diverter valve ain't quiet delivering the stealth I like.

The first time I put a MAF setup on, I wasn't sure if that sound was right or not ... I think I posted a while back that I've actually kept my AFM on (and the cat too) since my last smog because it's quiet again. But I'm gonna go back to the MAF setup shortly here (w/o cat). Maybe a stealth MAF setup - i.e. keeping the stock airbox - is in your future??

If you handle a lot of air at high velocity, you will have air noise.
It's not the duct that makes the noise, it's the air velocity.

+1, you can go to a local JY for inspiration but you gonna be disappointed. Pop the hood on any FI car. What you'll find are resonance chambers and long runners all in an effort to slow down and quite in rushing air!
Obviously Porsche did not care because there is nothing like that on the 951's and packageing it in would be a challenge!

Keeping the windows up and or ear plugs is easier!

I have a Vitesse MAF and Stage 2 turbo - my car sounds like a jet. But, I love it.

Actually, that's just what I came from - a SciVision MAF mounted to the factory air box. However, I just put on a 27/6 and figured it was likely best to get factory box out of the way.

The change in the intake sound was an unanticipated side effect.

I don't need to make the intake silent, I think I just need to dampen the sound somewhat....I'm going to look into some sort of simple surround that directs / deadens the noise. I need to make a heatshield separator so I can just add this aspect into the plan.

I've always been able to hear my turbo and dv with the stock airbox.

Jeff - try a 90 degree silicon elbow like I did to point the filter downwards. It made a noticeable decease in intake sound, for only a tiny loss in boost. I'm no sound engineer but I think the sound bouncing off an internal silicon wall 'quietens' it down somewhat. An alternative would be to have the 90 degree elbow going through the hole in the side of the front wing and have the cone filter behind the wheel arch liner
