LSD info needed.....
I recently purchased an 87 951 salvage car, and the previous owner had accumulated some parts that he gave me with the car. I have a differential that needs identification. I can't make out the name since the ID is on the roughest part of the casting. I described it to a local gear shop and they said it was Gleason/Thornsen, (spelling..?).
Anyone knowing the correct spelling or distributors for these diffs please post here as I need parts to service it. Terry |
I believe you are referring to the Gleason Torsen differential, commonly referred to simply as a Torsen- some people call it a Torsion, but it is Torsen, as in TORque-SENsing... Anyway, the Torsen's were an option on the 968's, as were the ZF's in '92, but they dropped the ZF after that leaving only the ZF's (for 968's at least). As far as I know, ZF's were the only LSD's available for the 944 series. ZF stands for a German word and means something like geared something or other... I read the exact German word and meaning on the Rennlist a long time ago, but the ZF's should be quite common and easy enough to find out about.

I'm familiar with ZF, as I'm a tranny tech by trade, and they supply automatics to BMW, Mercedes and ironically Jaguar.. No wonder I couldn't find info though as I was searching "Thornsen"... |

Terry, sounds like your diff. was a unit made by Gleason Works, the original company that bought the rights to manufacture this diff from Gleasman. Thanks Danno, I had been to your page when I was considering removing my clock for the Arm1, but fabricated my own plate that accomodates it, the ARC, and has room for SFR's MBC if the dimension Tim sent me will remain true on the finished product, in the console.
I've had no sucess finding parts yet, but I'm still looking. One of the article you posted, states that the complete diff has to be returned for repair.. I find this hard to believe. If the spur gear is cut as part of the worm wheel it may not be worth repairing. If they are locked to them and serviceable separately then I'll attempt it, being I find the parts.. Zexel-Torsen has an application chart and DO list AUDI, but no PORSCHE.. The guy I aquired it from would have had no other reason to have it since all the other parts he had were for 951.. Any other suggestions would be appreiciated, my stock trans has no LSD in an 87 turbo I'm building and should achieve about 300-325 RWH on a dyno when finished . Ironically (by my user name) you would guess I have an 87 944S and it DOES have LSD, but the ratios are very different.. Thanks again |
