Auto Union automaker Horch was first to call car 951
So they already built a "951" car in Germany back in the '30s...
I wonder if the 944 Turbo's Audi (formerly Auto Union) heritage had anything to do with it's internal factory designation "951"?

Ironically, founder August Horch died in -you guessed it- 1951.

Mercedes-Benz have waked up another died German mark "Maybach". It's even more luxrious than top of the line MB's.
I suppose it's just matter of time when we will see Horch cars too !

There's an interesting story behing the Horch and Audi names. August Horch sold off his original car company, but part of the deal was the buyers got to keep the name Horch and he was prohibited from using his own name in any future automotive endeavor!
"Horch" in German translates to "hear" (as in listen.) So, when he wanted to start another car company later he named it Audi, which is Latin for "hear." Auto Union was formed in 1932 by combining the companies Audi, Horch, DKW and NSU (IIRC). The four rings logo reflects this merger. <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" />

Thanks Luis, I had a feeling I was off on that last one but I did remember an NSU connection.
I visited the Audi Museum in Ingolstadt last year and they have an absolutely stunning display of historic auto's, including the Wanderers as I now remember. The Porsche Museum in Stuttgart has a wonderful collection of auto's, but there isn't much at all to the display itself. It's kind of small and cramped -- hopefully they'll expand it at some point. The BMW museum in Munich was a huge disappointment to me, it seemed very dated.
